It doesn't correlate to the true value of a hitter. A .320 hitter with a .350 on base is less valuable then a 280 hitter with a 380 on base.
You need the ancillary contextual stats to put the numbers in proper perspective. Same with qb rating as golden explained very well earlier in the thread.
Larry Walker hit .350 in 2001. Barry Bonds hit .328.
