I mean Clowney at least proved his production with the team. Graham and Harvin were successful on other teams with completely different schemes. My only concern about resigning Clowney is that he will be coming off a surgery. So you never know what you'll get after that.

Clowney is such a wildcard. Signing him could result in many wins or losses because he's so impactful in stuff not shown on the stat sheet but he also makes bad penalties and gets injured a lot.

As a 49er fan I hope they keep him because I think that will prevent them from signing other big time players who could help and be healthy. But I also know he is much better than the stats say.

I've watched Clowney's entire career with the Texans. He'll give you four... maybe five solid games with one of them lights out... then... hibernate for rest of the season. Think about it, how does one not put up Aldon Smith like stats with JJ Watt on the line and Merciless manning OLB....???? Clowney has the answer.

Very true. Inconsistent pass rusher at best. Never getting over 10 sacks with a ton of help. Right now I'd rather have AA bc he has help around him AND performs more consistently

This was their 8-8 year, especially given injuries, except that RW elevated them to division round. Margin for error next year should be better given $60M cap space.

One thing about that $60m in space is that they gave up a few draft picks this year to acquire guys so they will already be in the same draft boat we are this year.... making it harder to restock with cheap alternatives.

Some of their notable UFAs:

Clowney - could stay but would cost at least 1/4 of that 60m in cap hit (paid more but talking just cap hit)
Ansah - probably gone
Kendricks - He's gonna get paid, dont see him with Seattle next year. Hes 29 so likely will be looking for the best offer through FA
Fant - Who knows what seattle wants to do with their line
Iupati - See above
Ifedi - See above
Two roleplayers on DL - Jefferson and Reed
then
Hollister - He's gonna be looking for a pay raise, dont think Seattle will be the one giving it to him but he's restricted

Everyteam turns over a bit each year, Niners will be hit hard as well, but that $60m takes a significant hit trying to keep clowney... then add in Kendricks and it could almost be cut in half by two players. Thats not even addressing 3 of their OL that started for much of the season or their defensive lineman roleplayers. If they dont try to resign clowney they give up on their draft investment in him and if they dont resign Kendricks the middle of the field starts to open up. Wagner cant do everything by himself.
What do they do about Oline next year? They have 2-3 free agents. Not a ton of draft capital. Is there a strong FA market?

Problem for them is most of the league has cap space.

Thing is, it *should* have been a rebuilding year for Seattle. They would've finished 9-7 and out of the playoffs but for two missed GW FGs against them, both of them under 50 yards. That's even allowing all the other lucky breaks they had go their way.

Even forget the missed FG against the 49ers; if Greg Zuerlein connects from 44 yards and everything else stays the same, both LA and Seattle finish with a 10-6 record, and LA wins the head-to-head tiebreaker (2-0) to advance to the playoffs. Then all of a sudden we're talking about how you can't count out the resilient Goff and Sean McVay, and how this was a rebuilding year for Seattle and they need to figure things out to get back into contention.

Yet, due to two plays that Seattle had zero influence over, they're 11-5 and everyone treats them like a top team.

Not only that but then in the playoff game the opposition starting qb gets injured and the backup plays almost the entire game with a torn hamstring.

I thought Kendricks was going to the Pokey

I would take Hollister on this team tbh. I think he's what we need as a TE #2

I dunno, seems like we've been expecting them to revert back to the mean for a few years now but they just find ways to win.

One thing is for certain, NFC West is far and away the toughest conference in the NFL

agreed, they'll remain competitive... that said, did you guys know the Seahawks have the longest NFC Championship game appearance drought in the NFC West?
the cardinals are waiting longer, don't they?

lol, given your logic, we can count ourselves lucky because plenty of our games were very close. We lucked out against Seattle in the second game!

At the end of the day, if you are 11-5 or better, you are a good team. There is no if if if.

Nope, Cardinals lost in the NFCC to the Panthers a few years ago.

What happened to Gary Flanagan.........is he still crying lol
An APB has been issued for GaryFlanagan
Geez, all over the internet Seattle fans are crying that they lost the game on the first down ball spot. They are all ignoring the fact that the yellow line is Fox's unofficial line not the actual first down mark. Based on that, he cleared it with ease. Lol, those silly kids. Can't blame em since they've only been watching football since 2014.
