DeForest Buckner Traded to the Colts

This is a little homerism but hopefully more realism. I just feel like except for maybe Ramsey Buckner was the best combo of BPA, greatest need, scheme fit and most value where he was picked in the first round (with it possible Ramsey going to Jax still not the best combination of those 4 things where he was picked). Am I up in the night?
That being said, I think these two guys were the best picks in top 10 factoring everything in, and maybe by a lot. Admittedly I'm crushing on Buckner and think he's a flat out stud. Huge upside and skill-set along with a high motor, plus he's nearly a flawless character guy. What's not to love.

It's tortuous the anticipation of wanting to see these guys on the field. Dial can rotate at all three DL positions and Blair can rotate at either DE spot to rush the passer. We'll see if any of these UDFAs or prior PS guys/backups can push anyone.

Garrison Smith, Darren Lake, Demetrius Cherry, Kaleb Ramsey -- it's an uphill battle for them. AA, Buckner, Dial, Williams, Blair, TJE, and Purcell have the edge, but I'd think the latter two need to worry. Especially Purcell considering Dorsey is expected to return at some point next season.

Think if we had a healthy Dorsey. Our line depth would be that much more phenomenal with him rotating in the middle.

Armstead - Williams - Buckner
Blair - Dorsey - Dial
TJE - Dial - Blair

Agree I think we have a ton of young talent on the DL plus getting back a healthy Dorsey and Williams
I'm real excited and looking forward to seeing our two first round picks play.

Just saw the video that shows buckner has a first push that's harder than a big horn ram. And throwing around him is is like throwing around a tank lol. Sports science home page

Ditto, here - can't wait to see our young talent play. Buck particularly is going to be fun to watch.
Quick question i have for the more knowlegable poster. When Armstead was drafted and to some degree Buckner, i kept hearing how if they are "coached up" they can or will be beasts. But we have the same guy who was coaching them in college at both the Dline(Rizzano or whtever) and Kelly.

So how they gonna get "coached up" lol? Armstead was fortunate to have a year with Jimmy T, less fortunate Justin Smith retired, but Buckner supposed to be better anyway. Just seems odd we bring back a guy who had them at the "coached up" level

I think the term used often was "raw". As if that didn't apply to every prospect coming out of college. I think what was meant was that they have the physical build to succeed in the NFL, just need refinement in the intricacies of their position. They were able to use sheer size and strength to win battles in college, but in the NFL that will not be enough. Often, college players that are physically superior to other college players get sloppy with technique because they can still win their battles using size/strength.

The DL coach for the 49ers only coached Buckner and AA for 1 season. He went to PHI in 2013.
Ok not bad. For all the negative stuff Chip Kellys philly teams get, they had a steady pass rush it seemed and good special teams

Azzinaro only coached Armstead and Buckner during their first college season.

Armstead was raw in that he had limited experience. He never fully dedicated himself to football until his final year in college. He split time between football and basketball before that. He flashed a lot of potential at times, and it was thought that if he just became more consistent and more polished as he focused on football he could become a dominant player.

Buckner is far more polished than Armstead coming out but also has very good upside in that he has the size, athleticism and talent to continue developing his skills and the potential to become a dominant player in the NFL.

Azzinaro had a lot of success in Philly with their DL, the defense overall wasn't very good but the DL showed considerable improvement and guys played very well for the most part. I don't see him being a big dropoff, or really any dropoff from Tomsula. He has a heavy focus on fundamentals and hand skills and you saw several mid to late round DL's blossom under his tutelage with the Iggles.

In the NFL coaches are allowed to coach from the big boy playbook and dip into the magical coaching pixie dust which gets their coaching game to the next level.

Rest assured even though he's the same coach they had in college now that they're all in the NFL it will be Super Saiyan Azzinaro.

Either that or they're more mature overall physically and mentally, their technique is more consistent and they also learn from the veteran players around them.

One of those two.
