Do you guys think we are having issues managing the cap, or is this just another sign of the York's being cheap? Or a side effect of drafting all of these D-linemen in the first round so close together?

Not resigning Sanders after giving up a 3rd & 4th round pick is unusual as well.

What are we saving that cap room for?: Resigning Solomon Thomas and George Kittle?

We traded him on rookie money? And kept Ford? 800 snaps vs 250. Tough decision right there.

Yes, Buckner was going to cost a lot more than D-Ford.

But they are no where near the same type of player.

How could it be an issue of the Yorks being cheap? That narrative should be long dead. If anything, they have spend too much, not too little.

Also, the pass rush also was not getting there without Ford. As long as it took for us to get true edge guys, I'll take Bosa + Ford for a year. Hopefully the team is proactive and add another edge guy that can be groomed to replace Ford. It will be interesting to see who is added to the mix of Bosa and Ford + AA. It seems they are going with the guys they have and hopefully another rookie.
Most people outside of SF have said the Colts overpayed in both the pick they gave up and the contract they gave Defo. So we really can't blame the Niners front office for making this deal. The Chiefs fans would love to get a mid to early 1st round pick for Jones and he is better than Defo.

I think he just wanted the money. Hawaii is very expensive for him and his family.
That's true, Hawaii relies on the import of most of their supplies, so the cost of living is higher than most other places. Even California as I understand it.

Unless you are able to grow all of your own food, and even if you do, you still rely heavily on the system.
When you think about the fact you can't pay everyone and we have to pay Kittle, Warner, EMan, DJ Jones and lock up Brunskill, it makes sense. Can't tie up 40 million to with Buck/Arik.

Kittle, Warner, McGlinchey are the 3 that's going to cost premium money. Plus, we may have some attrition in the secondary (Sherman, Tartt, Witherspoon, Williams, and Moseley are UFAs after the season).

Could we have afforded Buckner and extend the core 3? Yes, but it'll come at a price in the secondary. You should share the wealth across multiple positions to ensure you have ample talent across the field.
Colts gonna be sneaky good this season though. They bulked up the front 4 with the addition of Buck and Day. Drafted J.Taylor to pair with Mack to run behind one of the best if not the best OL in the league. Rivers although aged, is still one of the best play-action QBs out there.

Teams will eventually turn back to a run heavy system against these smaller defenders now, thanks to the 49ers and Ravens success last season. Colts will be one of them to follow this season.
