The '84,'89 & '94 Niners would have wiped the floor with the '85 Bears

The '85 bears were a tremendous team but I just don't buy them as the greatest of all time. There's nothing that seperates them from our '84 & '89 squads or the '75 & '78 steeler squad other then a bunch of hype around the characters in that team.
I just love how the '84 niners shutout what eventually became the '85 bears and then dominated a better version of the team that eventually gave that '85 bears team their only loss. Also had the same 18-1 mark, yet the bears team gets ranked higher then them in most discussions. Plain and simple, between the '84 niners & '85 bears, the niners had the better coach, better offensive player and better defensive player.
The Bears defense gave up 10 total points in 3 playoff games. That is unreal.

Actually the Bears D in 1984 was statistically better than the 85 Bears D.
But IMO, if there ever was a tournament between all the SB winners, I will bet that the 1984 49ers will end up meeting the 1985 Bears in the Finals.

It was the '86 defense that was better then '85 (they only gave up 187 points in 1986 compared to 198 in '85) but Charles Martin body slamming Jim McMahon in week 12 killed that season for the Bears. They ended up signing Doug Flutie, which the players hated, he ended up completing 35% of his passes with 2 interceptions in there playoff loss.

Here was their run:
1984: 248pts 3863yds 72sacks 21ints
1985: 198pts 4135yds 64sacks 34ints
1986: 187pts 4130yds 62sacks 31ints
1987: 282pts 4215yds 69sacks 13ints
1988: 215pts 4360yds 43sacks 26ints
1987 only played 15 games. 1984 gave up the least yds and had the most sacks. 1985 had the most picks and 1986 surrendered the least amount of points.

Only thing I hate about the '85 Bears is that Parcells yields that his Giants could have beaten them maybe once in 10 tries, but always felt confident he could beat our team.

we have had good defenses but i think wally is probably right , like he usually is. there was no weak link and it was not a one year wonder either. nor did they have to go out and buy a bunch of people

Steelers D was closer to that of Baltimore's D in their first Super Bowl.. while Da Bears of 85 really put some PAIN all around the league..
uhmmm.. I still gotta give it to the 85 Bears and still believe that only the 1984 (49ers) team woulda able to beat them via PRECISION.

I don't know why most of you are hung up on the fact that the 1984 team is the Niners best team most probably. Although the 84 team had a better defense, it did not have Rathman rice Taylor and many other players that were ridiculous, including Charles Haley. Some of those players were unstoppable. However on the 8014 there were not many players that were unstoppable it was a great team but did not have the playmakers they could take out a bears or Steelers defense like the 89 team did or could have. The 89 team dominated the number one defense in the Broncos was the best team of all time. If the team can score 55 points on the number one defense that is ridiculous. Any team with rice on it would be hard to stop especially with Montana Being a pretty mobile quarterback he can escape pressures by some of those great defenses like the Steelers or the Bears. However with the short passing game those defenses are vulnerable because they may not get enough pressure. Also the Steelers secondary and the Bears secondary weren't all that great it was mainly the pressure applied with their front sevens.
The Bears did not have a good offense at all. An average quarterback, a bad receiving corps, just a great running back that is it. Not even a great offensive line. The Steelers team had great receivers a great running back a very good OL and a dominating defense. Bradshaw would be the one that would choke if anything playing the 89 Niners. If he tried to keep score with the 49ers he would definitely lose that game for them. Where as Montana is so smart and accurate, plus it doesn't hurt having Rice Taylor Rathman Craig Jones and a great offensive line which would have given the Steelers very bad problems.

Good post Elguapo.
I think '84 gets the aura for the defense and the near perfect record. But having bigger names at the skill positions on offense on the '89 team should yield the better team.
Plus when you think of it, the 1990 49ers were way better than the '85-'86 49ers, about as good maybe better than '87-88 except for Craig's knee. People underestimate the Giants of '90 and overestimate the 49ers of '90 when comparing the two teams....that '90 SF 49er team to be 14-2 gunning for a 3peat when you factor in the brutalness of that.....it's impressive.
Now I don't know '84 inside out.....if you COULD sell me that the '84 running game was better than '89 then that would be the main counterargument because those late '80s Giants teams found a way to F with our offense better than anyone else, and that was because they could neutralize the run and key in on Brent Jones to throw our attack off.
