gonna have to admit.. the raiders with tyvon branch/dj hayden/tarell brown is a pretty good secondary. now add lamar woodley, justin tuck and antonio smith for the front seven.. and you got yourself a VERY intriguing defense. now if they can just hold onto those guys for 2-3 years and build thru the draft, they can forge a new identity. that defense alone is going to get you 4 wins IMO. If McFadden can just play the way he did in 2011, i think they can actually break even this year (on paper atleast).

Signing both Tuck and Woodley today takes a little sting out of the first two embarrassing days of free agency.
IF McKenzie had signed (Veldheer and) Houston, it would have been a monstrous defense, imho.
QB, #1 WR, Safety, OT are their biggest needs, imo. WR and QB can be filled with the first two picks. Though, I would go for an OT or Watkins in round 1.

Losing Houston really hurt them.

The 49ers reportedly were offering Brown $10 million over three years. The 29-year-old opted to bet on himself and hit the market again next offseason rather than return to San Francisco.
A 42-game starter over the past three seasons, Brown likely will line up opposite 2013 first-round draft pickD.J. Hayden in Oakland.

A life long Niner! I'll miss him and wish him the best.
I said this during the season... Brown was our most overrated CB. QBs routinely tested him because they simply were not afraid of him. He didn't often give up huge plays, but he gave up drive-sustaining first downs which resulted in points for the other teams. What irritated me the most was the fact that he would give up 3 first downs, then finally break up one pass and proceed to make some stupid ass gesture as if he'd been shutting everyone down all day. He was/is an average CB. Not a great signing by Oakland, but also not a poor one. If Tuck and Woodley can generate some sort of pass rush, he could do OK.

Looking at their schedule, 4 wins would be their ceiling.

especially since they're not going to be able to score points

They made a big mistake last year by not sticking with Pryor through his ups and downs. Should have let him learn.

shockingly--to me, at least--pryor made strides as a qb last year. but, i also saw him regress in his mechanics many times. it's as if he's trying to do something he has no natural inclination for. he's a long term work in progress with maybe a 50% chance of being a starter who can keep his job. now, a coach can't live with that situation; he would be fired before the answer comes about his project. that's why pryor can't start there. he doesn't throw touchdowns and put the team in winning situations game-to-game.
they should just give a college-experienced nfl rookie a good shot next year--someone like mccarron or murray--if they don't get a respectable nfl vet, and see if they can win some.

I don't think it would have mattered. Pryor has the physical tools, but doesn't have the brains to be a good QB. McGloin is the exact opposite. They were screwed either way.

Agreed...they crapped the bed even before free agency started by not using a non-exclusive franchise tag on Veldheer and using the transitional tag on Houston (in capped years, you can use both the franchise and transitional tags).
