It's not an apples to apples comparison. Alex had nothing to work with in the passing game. Kolb has a hall of fame WR. He also has more stable coaching. Kolb also had the luxury of sitting for a few years to learn and develop at his own pace.
It truly is. He should've shown a noticeable increase in the offense and the season progressed but his skill set looks incredibly limited and he is obviously injury prone, which is simply bad luck on his part.
He's nothing more then a stop gap QB until Whiz drafts a new QB or gets fired and the new coach brings in his own guy. Kolb will get one more year and if doesn't show noticeable increase in skill and ability to run the offense and probably deliver the team to a 10 win season he will get the boot.
Next years QB class looks like this

-Landry Jones
-Aaron Murray
-Tyler Bray
-Tyler Wilson
-EJ Manuel
-Geno Smith
No way the cards don't re-up at QB if Kolb has another bad year.
