Yes there are, currently we have AA, playing right across from the RT, his plan is almost exclusively to bull rush them, there's no reason Nick couldn't be given an expanded role, he still plays the run plenty well enough.
Yes and who on this forum wouldn't want Bosa over AA? Lol

This. Watched the above video. He is as dominant from the right side as the left. Doesn't seem to matter

Nice to have you on board, the side you rush from just doesn't matter anymore, DC's just looking for favourable matchups.
Wouldn't drafting Bosa require Armstead to play NT?

4-3
Thomas Armstead Buckner Bosa
Ford Warner Alexander

3-4
Armstead Buckner Thomas
Ford Warner Alexander Bosa

No, it would simply take one or both of AA and Solly off the field completely.

Bigger question is, do you care?
Where would he go? To the QB!!!!!!!!!

MD, could you explain the different DL/LB positions we have, how much they play, their responsibilities and what a prototype there looks like? I'm having a hard time understanding if Bosa or the other "edge" players would or would not fit, given who we already have. Thanks!

Thanks, this is awesome. If I'm understanding, there is the base alignment that we play 30% of the time where the LEO (Ford) rushes the passer, there's a DT (Buck) and NT (Williams, if we go that route) who primarily play the run and can also rush, and the big DE (ST/AA). This DE is more of a 34 DE, so both AA and ST fit will. The SAM is primarily tasked with playing the run and covering the TE. Can also blitz, if they have that skill set. 70% of the time we play in our sub-package, with 3DBs, 2 safeties and 4 linemen. All of these guys need to rush the passer. Ford and Buck stay, and if we do go with Williams, he would stay too, and if we don't, this is a good opportunity for ST to rush from the inside. The other DE needs to also be a pure pass rusher, and seems like we still lack that. If we go with Bosa, he fills that role.

So it looks like if we go with Bosa:

Base D (30% of snaps): Ford-Buck-Jones-Bosa. There's no room for AA or ST, even though either can take Bosa's spot. But either can also take Ford's spot, to focus on the run.

Sub (70%): Ford-Buck-ST-Bosa. In this scenario there's a clear plan for ST in a position of strength and AA can take that spot too. That's a great line across the board.

If we draft Williams

Base: Ford-Buck-Williams-AA. This is a pretty amazing base D, and in cases where we want to focus on the run, ST can take Ford's spot.

Sub: Ford-Buck-Williams-AA. In this case AA is one of our edge rushers, which isn't ideal, and there's no room for ST to play inside, where he actually plays well.

I want QW over Bosa, but it doesn't make sense for our roster, if we want to utilize SM and AA, and have the best sub package. On the flip-side, is QW too good to pass up on, because of ST?

Not one bit.

Hand in dirt, right defensive end. Maybe Bosa is the one who doesn't play base downs. I don't think Aldon played base his first year. Dee plays weak side every down. I don't know though because I haven't figured out how they envision Thomas yet going forward. I envision him on the bench, but we will see.

That's pretty much it as traditional 4-3 under goes (though AA should never again be an edge rusher in nickel)

I think Saleh would like to be more creative (or had to try to cover lack of talent) Bosa definitely simplifies things.

Depending on competition, I think Ford will get the nod as an everydown LEO.

Have you even seen him play?! That statement is nonsense.

so you think Ford will move to SAM?

My belief is that they paid Ford all that money, so they expect him to play LEO on every down. Has nothing to do with Bosa's ability, tbh

being a base SAM is basically what he did in KC. I don't want my 245 lb edge rusher taking on tackles (who's already not great at stopping the run). He's setting the edge vs TEs at SAM. Also we rarely have them run out in coverage.

All that said who gives two craps out how we setup our base D? We play out of it like 10-12 times a game (according to our film gurus in niner talk).

I care more about rushing the pass and you need two DEs coming off the edge. Teams around the NFL are paying dudes like Za'Darius Smith and Preston smith $14- $16 million per to do just that
