You generally aren't looking for a specialist or 1-trick pony @ #2. You're looking for VALUE.
I mean that's what I'm looking for. Value is what's said in the 3rd round.
Kyle's not a "VALUE" guy. There's a ton of tape and interviews on how Kyle and John approach the draft and neither of them seem to think that way. In fact, the only people that do seem to think that way are draft critics who compare and grade each team's draft relative to other teams. Kyle and John go get the guys they like that fit their system and don't seem to worry about value.
Thomas wasn't the highest value at 3, a QB would have been.
Pettis, Warner, and CJ weren't great values where they were picked either.
Based on the draft videos they'd rather take a guy they want a round too early than to be a round too late.
I didn't want to derail the thread further, but it's nuts on NT. Anyway there won't be any buzz on Allen until he destroys his Pro day.
Although they could probably get better at working the board, their first year showed promise, they obtained a bounty of picks to move down and still get their guy (would be better if he was actually good!) and also manouvered well for Foster (obviously that didn't work but the Saints were about to pick him so value was there).
They put a premium on guys that fit their scheme and identity, I much prefer that than Baalke who was all about value. I never again want to see a GM pick someone like Tank Carradine, who just didn't fit the defense, too small to play 5 Tech, not agile enough for SAM or WILL, just a wasted pick based on value.
