OnTheClock's Big 253 Board: April 23

We are just days from the draft now and if you're like me, the anticipation is killing you right now. This will be the second to last update of the big board, with the finalized selections being posted up either Wednesday night or Thursday afternoon before the draft (AKA the MadDog vs. OTC showdown: Round Three). Can you feel the exhilaration? Before reading this board, please note the disclaimers below (if you've read mine and MD's boards before, this'll be nothing new to you).

1) This is NOT a ranking

2) This is NOT a seven round mock. A mock outside of the first round is straight-up impossible because of the sheer volume of trades that occur. For fun, just check out the number of teams that were not selecting in their preordained spot in any draft. It is spectacular.

3) This board projects the general slot area that I believe these players will fall. It may not be the exact spot, but the idea is to pinpoint the players value and likelihood of being selected in a general area or range.

The first round is mocked out with trades mixed in. The Niners selections are in bold, and cherry picked from the general area I believe a player will be selected.

OTC,
Why are you thinking Silatolu over Zeitler?
Don't you think a safety is the Niners' third highest need? How about Markelle Martin for Turbin in the third or Trent Robinson/Aaron Henry for McNutt in the 4th?

Yeah right now it sits Goldson, Whitner, Holcomb, and Colin Jones going into a draft. We may draft one by the 4th round. With Goldson on the tag it is a need for sure.

Perceived upside. I've been going back and forth between the two. I think Baalke's comments, if truly indicative of our potential pick and the expectation that they should be there, Zeitler and Silatolu both fit. Silatolu however, seems to fit more of Baalke's "long-term impact" mold, like Aldon Smith did.

I think safety is a need, but I think Martin will be gone before we have a shot. Personally, if Martin is there at our 3rd rounder, I'd snatch him in a heartbeat. I view him as a 2nd round talent. Based on his play, I think he's a better prospect than Barron even. It's unfortunate there are no measurables to compare Martin with though.

Again, unless it's Martin, I don't see us taking a safety until the second half of the draft.
OTC thank you for your hard work and dedication to this site
To give people an idea of the "slotting" that I had in mind for the 49ers picks, here are four selections in each round in the area of the Niners picks that I have in mind as potential targets. (FYI, I have already flip-flopped Andre Branch and Kevin Zeitler, so take mental note accordingly)

1) OG Silatolu, OG Zeitler, TE Fleener, WR Randle

2) OLB Irvin, OG Brooks, NT Ta'amu, WR Givens

3) OC Blake, RB Turbin, DL Randall, TE Egnew

4) WR McNutt, NT Fangupo, RB Ballard, OLB Wilber

5) DL Harris, WR Wylie, DB Bethel, DB Menzie

6) CB Pellerin, OLB Smith, OLB Fugger, OG Leary

7) S Richard, CB Lane, OG Gradkowski, DL Van Bergen
OTC you gonna make a board like MD just did? Actually if you do can you rank players by position?

Very nice guide.

One small thing I noticed is that, IMHO, S Brandon Taylor is still far too low on your list. I feel he belongs somewhere around 90-100. Pretty good-looking list though.

I will not be making a Top 50 board. I would rather put my time into doing my positional ranking board. I think posting a Top 50 board too would both be redundant and wear me out more than I already am in making the Big Board and complete 49ers positional board.

So, I will continue to do what I have for the past few years and put out exactly what you just mentioned in your second question, a positional board listing my rankings/grades for every position that I feel the 49ers will target. To save time, I exclude some positions (like special teams). This year, my positional board will feature: RB, WR, TE, C, OG (some of these include potential OT/OG converts) for offense and 3-4 DE, NT, 3-4 OLB, ILB, CB, FS, and SS for defense.
