Do you think there's any chance Harbaugh could use a guy like him? I know Jim Harbaugh signed off on his brother drafting Joe Flacco, another big, big-armed QB. That being said, Flacco is more athletic than Mallet I would think.
I just think Mallet with his arm (power and ball placement) and his knack for "out-working everyone" is an elite QB waiting to happen. My favorite part is that he'll speak up when one of his teammates isn't getting it done. He expects to himself and everyone else to be perfect. A QB like that sounds so tempting after the meeker Alex Smith.
Honestly, I'd have to say no. I don't think the 49ers will take Mallett and will likely have him lower on the board below Stanzi even. From what I gather, Harbaugh really wants a QB that can run. Some of the things we do on offense, Mallett is just not a fit for. You're not going to ever see him on a waggle or bootleg or designed roll-outs.
Having an athletic QB is huge in misdirection and play-action because you have to be concerned that the guy feasibly could tuck it and run on any given fake. The ability to freeze the defense like that is always a tremendous help to your team. Mallett doesn't really give a team that. It's not that he can't ever run, it's just.. he's not going to get very far, and he's not a legitimate threat to move the chains with his legs.
Hmmmm . . . so the Niners couldn't use a Marino type player you think.
Quite possibly true. I know that multi dimensional QBs ( meaning those who can take off running) have an advantage, all other skills being equal. BTW I do believe that Mallet could handle designed roll out just fine; just not a designed running play. his footwork is excellent.
But Mallet is so good with his release and ball placement there's noone in this draft even close. That's worth a lot. A good coach will accomodate that. Shula did when he went from Griese to Marino (with a few years in between). Also P. Manning, Brady, Rivers aren't exactly threats with their running ability.
But I do hear you.
Then again, why did the Niners have him over for a visit if running ability was a prerequisite for them? Why waste the time? Please don't say it was a red herring; that just not credible. Just food for thought.
They want to get a closer look at everybody they can and get as much info as possible on each player. It's no secret we need a QB, so we're going to do our due diligence on them all.
Now to address the other points, I'm not saying the 49ers would hate to have Mallett or something like that. I just think Mallett will be lower on the priority list for them. There's always that small chance he could wind up being the pick, sure, but I see others being higher up on the board, largely due to
systematic preference.
Mallett's slow feet make it difficult to see him in a West Coast system, where timing is critical. He has a quick release, yes, but scouts note his footspeed leaves something to be desired. In the WCO, you've GOT to get in your drop and SET those feet QUICK and make that throw.
So despite the throwing ability, again, these things I think push him down the 49ers priority list. Hopefully I'm making some sense here.
