-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Positional Breakdown
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Quote:
QB - I think Alex Smith has and will continue to show that he is a good starting option at the position. I think he will continue to get better, and could possibly be excellent with a year of stability and a full offseason of planning behind him. Getting our OL upgraded and healthy will be important. Adding David Carr in FA was a good move, and I think between Carr and Davis, we will have good backups. I don't see a strong enough reason to draft a QB this year. I don't see a rookie being an upgrade to what we have.

Quote:
RB - Frank Gore is locked in as our studly starter. He is quick enough to be a threat with whatever offensive scheme we put around him. He's an excellent pass blocker, and is effective as a receiver out of the backfield. The plans for Coffee are unclear. He is a one-cut downfield runner and capable of substantial carries should an injury occur to Gore. 2nd round rookie Jahvid Best will see snaps in the spread formations and be used in conjunction with Gore to create mismatches.

Quote:
FB - Norris has been ineffective and doesn't fit what we are doing here. He once again gets a wave g'bye. MRob is an underrated lead blocker when needed, and an all-purpose option in this role. He will be asked to bulk up a bit in the offseason for his new role.

Quote:
TE - VD stepped it up nicely and really surprised some people. Delanie Walker has also done well as the #2. We are set with them, and with the addition of rookie Shuler... an elite blocking TE. Jennings sticks as our excellent long-snapper and overall ST-er.

Quote:
WR - Another position that's pretty well set. Our top 4 are in place with Crabtree, Morgan, Jones, and Hill. I can see a good battle ahead for the #2 spot... with B.J. winning it. As for the blazing rookie, Jacoby Ford will be developed slowly and should be impressive right away as an excellent special teams option. He may even surprise on the receiver depth chart soon enough, and will be mixed in on snaps that have multiple WRs on the field.

Quote:
OL - Our OL plans look to include 4 out of the 5 starters from 2009. Staley, Baas, Heitman, and Rachal all are fairly locked in, and expectations are for Bryan Bulaga to sink right into the RT spot. He will have competition to earn the spot... as most will. Adding Mike Solari as our OL coach should give us a real boost to each OL, and Jeebus knows we need this OL to improve greatly.

Quote:
DL -Justin Smith earned his money at RDE, and is of course locked in there. I think RJF... with another year under his belt... will be excellent depth there. Aubrayo Franklin surprised and played well at NT. He's back for another year under the F-tag. The addition of 1st round pick Cody will really push Franklin, and Cody will be an excellent backup while being eased in at times. After a full 2 offseasons of Singletary's training camp, Cody's gonna be in great shape to take over in 2011. Sopoaga and Ray McDonald have all been solid at LDE, and Balmer will be pushed to the limit to take as many snaps there as possible... fantastic depth in any case.

Quote:
LB - No major changes here. SF will roll with Lawson, Haralson, and an emerging Brooks for the OLB roles. Spikes and Willis are back as the dynamic duo on the inside. A little more depth is added with rookie Jamar Chaney inside and veteran Anthony Waters outside.

Quote:
DB -The cornerbacks are left untouched, for the most part. SF has 4 quality corners in Clements, Spencer, Brown, and a resigned Bly. Hudson and Bly are brought back as good depth after not getting better offers in FA. The safety situation will need close scrutiny. Mike Lewis' concussions and contract are a concern. SF will limit him by subbing him out on pass downs. The hope is that Reggie Smith can stay healthy and take the next step at SS in warranting his 3rd round selection. Goldson improved greatly as the 2009 season progressed and is locked in at FS. SF could see contributions at safety from young Curtis Taylor and rookie Myron Lewis also.

I worked on it on and off since the Combine, but I had the overall outline of it for longer.

Very nicely constructed. I love your Best pick.

Thanks... I'm a huge fan of Jahvid Best. Depending on who is available and truth be told, I would smile at us selecting him at #17 overall. I think his vision and ability to shift gears while in motion is superior to that of Spiller... though C.J. is easily more accomplished as a receiver out of the backfield as well as return duties.
Nice looking presentation..

..However I find it long on style and short on substance, primarily because I disagree with many of your first round picks and don't expect the draft to unfold as you laid it out. For example Bulaga won't be around at 13 and neither will Williams at 18 or whatever.
Good breakdown and good way to construct your draft. I just don't see why Tampa would trade up for Suh though. I like all the players you drafted but I think I would take Odrick over Mount Cody, and with the CB depth looking real suspect I would take McCourty over Best. Having no 2nd means they should go for a CB now and try to get a fast play maker later on. But I wouldn't be mad if they took Best. And they gonna have to pay more than that to keep Sims. Nice work.

Hmmm... okay...

- Can you tell me how you would possibly throw more "substance" in it? Most drafts I have seen are nothing more than 7 names in order of 1-7. Are these filled with substance, or am I missing your meaning on that?

- This draft was not a prediction as much as it was... a wishful and desired outcome.

- I think it's a mistake to throw out absolutes on who will or will not be available (within reason). Did you know that in the entire history of the NFL draft... there has NEVER been 4 offensive tackles taken before the #13 overall pick? Never before... think about that. So while Bulaga + Trent W. could very well make the 3rd and 4th OT off the board... it seems rather unfair to suggest that they WILL be gone.

I disagree, I think Bulaga has a good chance of making it to #13. It all depends on what Seattle does at #6.
Great job oldman9er!

Please don't get the wrong idea.. I am not trying to throw you under the bus or come off as a troll. You obviously spent a lot of time on this.. It looks great. I just don't see it as very realistic..

As a wish list it's fine, although I personally don't like the Cody selection.

Cheers!!

Gotcha!

I can definitely see the "unrealistic" comment as reasonable. That would be a lot of moving and shaking for McC.

I agree, looks great, A for effort, but other than Bulaga (who I don't think will be there) I don't like any of these picks, too high of a bust potential. Cody is a 2 down player who will fight weight issues his whole career, and Best is 1 concussion away from having his career ended.
Outstanding work! I'm not a cody fan, but I could live with it.
