Very doubtful. If the Niners do not select Joe Haden in the first round, look for them to draft a CB who can return punts in the second or third round. I don't see them drafting another WR with Crabtree, Morgan, Jones (they have a ton of money locked onto him, and probably want to see what he can do next season) and Hill on the roster.

The Niners rarely run a third WR onto the field, since they have Walker out there the majority of the time. So, using a top draft pick on a guy who will only return punts wouldn't make sense in their current scheme.

However, if they draft a CB, they can play him at nickel or dime back right away, or if he is good enough, shift Clements to FS or to the curb.

Look for players like Perrish Cox in the 2nd round, if he is on the board, or a Kyle Wilson of Boise State or Javier Arenas of Alabama in the 3rd.

Do you project Cox as a future starter or just depth at CB?
Maddog,
Should the Niners pick him, which offensive tackles are good enough to allow the team to immediately move Staley to RT? Do you think this maneuver would be better done in free agency?
#94, Owusu-Ansah, goes to Indiana (pa). As always, good job. One of a few posters I always read.
So based on the slots...CJ Spiller and Mike Iuapti for the red and gold? :)
MadDog,

I realize the combine and underclassmen declarations will have an impact on the final evaluation, but at this point do you think this draft is as deep as the previous few years? Especially at our key positions of need: OL, DE/OLB, CB/S, there doesn't seem to be any can't miss prospects out of the top 10 at these positions unless someone falls (or has a huge combine). In your opinion do we still focus on positions of need in the first round or target BPA, especially if a guy like Bryant is there in the middle of the 1st?

Thanks for your hard work once again.

Question -- Do you think Haden will be available at 12?

If so, I think we should draft OT with 2nd pick as there seems to be more fall back choices for the OT position ie either Williams or Buluga.

Haden is going to be drafted right in that area. To me, it's slightly less than a 50-50 shot. He is easily the class of the CB's in this draft, so his value is surely increased. That might be enough to push him into that top 10, which I currently project.

The Panthers' two game winning streak should concern fans. They have gone from a sure top 10 pick to a team that could rise all the way to the mid-first round, if they win and a few teams at 7-8 and 8-7 lose. I'll say the Saints win this week, but if they don't, the Niners could be sitting at 15 and 16. And, that is Bulaga and Iupati range, as Williams and Davis will be off the board.

Then the Niners need to package the two picks and move up. The Niners need to take either Williams or Davis.

You have Benn ahead of Tate and Shipley ahead of Gilyard?

I actually like all 4 but Tate/Gilyard/Benn Shipley order. But can see the Benn ahead of Gilyard.

But back to my original question. Really?

No, we don't have enough talent to do that. If both elite Ts are taken, we should take Iupati and Bulaga. If Spiller is still on the board after we have picked a lineman, I feel that would be a no-brainer. Of course, with the offseason who knows what we're really gonna need other than RT and 2ndary.

How do Trent Williams and Anthony Davis compare?

If the Niners do slip down a bit and miss out on one of those top tier RT (that sounds like a bit of an oxy-moron really), would they target a 2nd round RT or just try to find an upgrade in FA?

Tony Pashos was supposed to be a big upgrade, but never seemed to get a chance to be familiar with the schemes.

Im not sure why everyone thinks we need another OLB. Maybe later in the draft but I'd think 1st priority is OT 2nd is Return man and third is safety. Hopefully the return man is a CB to cover any players that may leave ala Clements or Bly.

I would certainly be happy with an upgrade over Parys Haralson. I think he's fine, but I don't think he's a dominant, every down player that offenses have to game plan around. Ideally, I'd like to see the Niners start Lawson and ????, and then bring in Brooks and Haralson as pass rushing specialists.
Is Myron Rolle going to be at the combine?

To me, he's a starter. It might not happen from Day One, but he's got pretty much the whole package: Size, speed, quickness.

Yes. And, it looks like he'll be at the Senior Bowl.
