What Kyle Juszczyk said about the 49ers’ transition from Trey Lance back to Jimmy Garoppolo

Sep 21, 2022 at 4:51 PM--

The transition from Trey Lance back to Jimmy Garoppolo has not been difficult for the San Francisco 49ers. Teammates are familiar with Garoppolo, who had been the Niners' starting quarterback since the final handful of games of the 2017 season.

Garoppolo returned this season in a backup role. However, lance's season-ending injury (head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed today that it was indeed season-ending) has thrust the veteran quarterback back into the starting lineup.

A reporter asked one 49ers player about the transition from Lance to Garoppolo.

"I just want to start with I don't want to downplay how much we feel for Trey," fullback Kyle Juszczyk said in the locker room before Wednesday's practice. "That was our guy. We wish he was still out here doing his thing, but it's been a good transition. And granted, it's been like two days, so from what we've experienced so far, it's been good and seamless. I mean, Jimmy's been our quarterback here. This is like his sixth year, so you would expect him to be familiar and know what we're doing."

When players learned that Garoppolo would return for another season, some were shocked. After all, everyone assumed the quarterback would play elsewhere in 2022. Garoppolo wasn't practicing with the team, wasn't attending meetings, and didn't even have a playbook in his hands until after the 49ers' last preseason game.

Players didn't understand how Garoppolo's return was possible. But, when Shanahan laid out the plan, everyone was onboard. The quarterback is a locker-room favorite, after all.

Garoppolo joined his teammates on the practice field for the first time on September 1—as QB2. That was strange for some.

"It definitely was a little different to see him in that backup role, at first," Juszczyk said. "But even then, I still remember the first practice that he was back here; you immediately noticed Jimmy, just his presence and his command. And that's something that, now that he's back to being a starter, that he's flipped right back on."

On Sunday night, Garoppolo will lead the 49ers into Empower Field at Mile High for a Week 3 matchup against Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos.

One of the biggest debates since the San Francisco 49ers' Week 2 win over the Seattle Seahawks has been head coach Kyle Shanahan's use of Trey Lance. Many feel that the excessive use of quarterback runs unnecessarily put the second-year player in harm's way. Lance ended up suffering a season-ending ankle injury in the first quarter. During an interview on 95.7 The Game, fullback Kyle Juszczyk defended his head coach. He doesn't understand the criticism directed in Shanahan's direction, and the growing lack of trust from a very vocal segment of the fanbase. "I think he deserves that trust, and he's built that reputation to have that trust," Juszczyk told Damon Bruce and Ray Ratto. "He's had so much success in the decisions that he has made here that I think he's

It happened to [QB] Jimmy [Garoppolo] a couple of years ago, that

'Like riding a bike': 49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo, Kyle Shanahan discuss unexpected change at quarterback after Trey Lance injury

It's been a long, strange trip for Jimmy Garoppolo and the San Francisco 49ers, and it got even stranger on Sunday when he found himself back under center after what appears to be a season-ending injury to starting quarterback Trey Lance. Garoppolo has been with the 49ers since being traded from the New England Patriots in 2017. He led an unexpected late-season emergence after the trade that saw the 49ers finish with five consecutive wins -- a streak that sparked newfound optimism into a franchise that completely rebooted itself earlier in the year with the hiring of head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch after firing head coach Chip Kelly and general manager Trent Baalke following a 2-14 season in 2016. But that optimism vanished quickly in 2018 when

What Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett said about Jimmy Garoppolo, 49ers' defense and run game

Denver Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett jumped on a conference call with reporters, sharing his perspective on the upcoming Week 3 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers. Here are a few of the topics on which he touched. What do you see in quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo? "Having so much experience going against him, so much respect for him and his game," Hackett said. "He has an amazing release. He has the ability to get the ball out quick. He makes quick, fast decisions. I mean, he's a very good football player who's had a lot of success. I think I was at Jacksonville in 2017 when he [went to the 49ers], and he actually beat us toward the end of the season there. We were, I think, 10-and-4 or something like that, and he came out,
