Welcome to 'First and Goal'. This week we'll take a closer look at the debacle at Heinz Field, a game that appeared to be over somewhere in the second quarter. We'll also take a sneak peek at next week's tilt against the first place Cardinals. As always, be sure to check out our Hero of the Week. I think it is important to show how we as fans can be critical of our team without feeling like everyone should be fired and the whole season should be forfeited. Didn't everyone understand that we're a work in progress? Some people took this loss as an opportunity to tell me that my optimism was unfounded. I don't feel that way. The season is not lost. There were good things to come out of this game and it definitely humbled our team in a good way, showing that work still...

Welcome to 'First and Goal'. This week we'll review the stellar victory against the Vikings. We'll also peek ahead to next week's tilt against the Steelers in Pittsburgh. As always, be sure to check out our Hero Of the Week! Before we get to the game review, I just have to say... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!! All the optimists who tried to keep a glass-half-full attitude during the off-season from hell got flamed on this site and pretty much every site on the internet. Delusional they said... Baalke's an idiot they said... We're going to be lucky to win 4 games they said... And that's why they play the game, ladies and gentlemen, because you never truly know what you got until you lace em' up and keep score for real. I...

Welcome to 'First and Goal'. This week we'll take a guess as to what a possible 53-man roster will look like. We'll also throw out some season projections for our players and add them all up to create a possible team projection. With so many unknowns facing us this season it really is hard to say what kind of team we're going to be so I'll try to keep my projections cautiously optimistic. The first thing that jumps out at you is how hard it is to cut the field down to 53. We are going to be facing some difficult decisions and it wouldn't surprise me to see someone traded in order to make room. We have way too many TE's on the roster right now. We even have too many FB's which is a shame. I love Bruce Miller and I think Millard is a player but the current trend in the...

Welcome to 'First and Goal'. A lot has happened since I saw you last. Tom-Tom got in trouble for his balls. Ray-Ray got arrested again. And again. But the biggest news of all has to be the official start to Ron Jimsula's coaching career. Or is it Steve Bobsula? Hold that… that can't be right. Let me check the media guide here… ah yes, the official start to Jim Tomsula's coaching career! It doesn't matter anymore how the national press thinks about us; hint-not very impressed. It doesn't even matter what our own fans think anymore, good or bad. OTA's have begun and all we have to judge is what actually happens on the field. And on that note, what I've heard so far is outstanding. As always, be sure to check out our Hero of the...

Welcome to 'First and Goal'. This week is all about the Draft baby! I'm glad I waited to write this. I've been up, I've been down, I've hated it and now I'm coming around. Before we even get into this draft manifesto I'd just like to commiserate with the rest of you out there. We all know the draft is an inexact science. But if we're going to fail, we at least want to fail with our guys. There's nothing worse than falling in love with a player, only to see him ball out somewhere else. We're all guilty of it. Such is Life. Baalke always takes the smart girl from band class. Sometimes she grows up to be what you thought she was. Other times she grows up to play bass and you want to hug the guy. Where will this class fall? Only time will tell. As always, be sure to...

Welcome to 'First and Goal'. This week we'll dive into part two of our draft special and look at some defensive studs that could help our team. We're getting close and rumors are flying. It seems like everyone has an opinion on the draft. I hate you NFL. I hate how much I love you. This will be a long 6 days. As always, be sure to check out our Hero of the Week. Let's get to it! 2015 Draft: Defense Edition Cruise control, you say? I do say. That's because Trent Baalke is a master of drafting defensive players. It's almost impossible to predict exactly how he's going to do it, but he's sure to add an impact defensive player with at least 1 of his 9 picks. The man is like wine… and judging by the...

Welcome to 'First and Goal', your guide to everything Niners. This week we'll dive into part one of our draft special and look at some offensive studs that could help our team. As always, be sure to check out our Hero of the Week! Let's get to it! 2015 Draft: Offense Edition The NBA took away hand-checking in 1994. Forearm bars went away in 1997. By 1999, defenses were no longer able to re-route players without getting a foul. By 2001, the defensive 3-second rule was enacted. The purists grumbled because, well, purists are old and they like to grumble about lots of things. I grumbled a little too, because my team was the Knicks. We relied on our defense. How else are you supposed to stop Michael Jordan without mugging him every time...

Welcome to 'First and Goal', your guide to everything Niners. This week we eat some humble pie, laugh at baseball a little bit and then look ahead to next year with a little player preview. As always, be sure to check out our Hero of the Week. Before we get to it I just have to say, I've been having a really hard time getting an interview with some of the 49ers assistant coaches. Not even the ball boy returned my calls. Such is the life of the unknown writer. But I didn't want to give up, so I read up on how the big boys do it. Apparently, not even stalwarts like Matt Barrows get to interview the assistant coaches. Only Taylor Price does. This isn't over yet. I'll get Steve Logan on the phone before the season starts and that's a promise....

Welcome to 'First and Goal', your guide to everything Niners. This week, we'll dive deeper into some expected changes to our offense this year, as well as review some interesting comments coming out of Arizona concerning our franchise QB. As always, be sure to check out our Hero of the Week. Let's get to it! Three Yards and a Cloud of Puke God bless Jim Harbaugh, he galvanized a talented team and took them to new heights. But he also sold us on an idea; a plan to descend into the basement at 49ers headquarters where they hold my cousin Bill's video collection, and using this vault of information to bring back the principles that once made this franchise the leader in all sports. All the information we needed was there, everything...

Welcome to 'First and Goal', your guide to everything Niners. This week, we'll take a deeper look at new Defensive Coordinator Eric Mangini, as well as say goodbye to yet another Niner, Chris Borland. We'll also take a look at a few college players that might fit our team, given the recent subtractions. As always, be sure to check out our Hero of the Week. Let's get to it! The 'Mangenius' Speaks For the most part, Eric Mangini has kept a low profile during his tenure as an offensive assistant, and later, as TE coach. Given the putrid output of our TE's last season, one can say he kept a very, very low profile. I for one am glad that Sparano is the new TE coach, with Mangini taking over a familiar spot as DC. Public...

Welcome to 'First and Goal', your guide to everything Niners. This week we'll dive into the roller-coaster of player movement that went down, as well as look ahead to some brighter days in Free Agency. We must try to remain optimistic. This is our favorite team, and while it hasn't been pretty, most of what happened was to be expected. It's the unexpected that hurts the most. As always, be sure to check out our Hero of the Week. Let's get to it! A Farewell to Arms Sunday night was a tough one. Long story short, a person I loved dearly chose to go her separate way, extinguishing any hopes of a future reunion. It honestly felt like I had been punched in the gut. And it didn't get any better Monday morning when someone texted me that...

Welcome to 'First and Goal', your guide to everything Niners. Every week, we'll get into all the pertinent information regarding your favorite football team and the NFL at large; be sure to also check out our 'Hero of the Week'. If there's time for world peace, we'll explore that too. Let's get to it! Analytics and Market Inefficiencies ESPN recently ranked teams in all 4 major sports to determine which organizations have the most innovative and successful data-analysis resources within their day-to-day operations. Our SF 49ers came in at a respectable #9 in the NFL. While some sports like baseball tend to have a higher percentage of teams using a numbers-based approach, it's good to see our team invest serious dollars into...

Welcome to 'First and Goal', your guide to everything Niners. I know what you're thinking. Is this Bill's 4th cousin? Maybe. Maybe. Every week, we'll get into all the pertinent information regarding your favorite football team and the NFL at large. Be sure to also check out our 'Hero of the Week'. If there's time for world peace, we'll explore that too. Let's get to it! The Mother of all Combines Peter King recently spoke about the obscene amount of news coverage the 2015 NFL Combine has received during his tenure, indicating an increase of 5300% in the amount of reporters on hand. If so, can anyone help Baalke find a WR? I kid, I kid, but the reality is, the 2015 NFL draft will be an important one for our Niners....
