During free agency nearly every impact player the 49ers signed was on the offensive side of the ball. They totally overhauled (at least for the time being) the quarterback position. They added receivers, a fullback, running back depth, a blocking tight end and traded for a veteran offensive lineman. The only defensive player they signed who isn't expected to be a depth/special teams guy was Malcolm Smith. The draft is the perfect opportunity to address the team's needs on the defense. This draft is very deep... Matt Miller Stacking the board from top to bottom for the '17 class was no easy task. There is a record-breaking amount of first-round talent on my board. Outside of Round 1, it was easy to imagine 60 of the top players...

The San Francisco 49ers have several holes to fill across their entire roster. Years of neglect by ousted general manager Trent Baalke have left more than a few positions very thin. However, the neglect has also resulted in having the second most cap room available in the NFL. This will enable the new regime of John Lynch and his crew to not only use the sensible approach to overhauling the roster through the draft but also to sprinkle in a veteran presence to an otherwise very young team through free agency. Trying to predict what the 49ers are going to do in free agency is difficult considering there is little evidence of how Lynch and Kyle Shanahan have approached an offseason before. Nearly every article concerning the 49ers and free agency suggests the team sign one of...

The San Francisco 49ers general manager and head coaching searches are off and running. It might be a while before we figure out the identity of the new head coach. The most intriguing candidates are Josh McDaniels and Kyle Shanahan, offensive coordinators who are coaching in the playoffs next weekend and require immediate interviews. If the 49ers were to land one of them, the hiring might not be officially announced for several more weeks, depending on how deep New England and Atlanta play in the post season. Meanwhile, the pursuit of a general manager is also taking place and there's a chance a GM could be in place somewhat sooner. Last year there were three new GM's hired in the NFL. Miami gave head coaching and personnel duties to Adam...

The first step toward recovery is admitting you have a problem. As 2016 comes to a merciful end, the San Francisco 49ers definitely have problems. In the NFL, it doesn't get much worse than a 13 game losing streak, at least outside of Cleveland. Hitting rock bottom will hopefully be a catalyst for large-scale changes, possibly even a complete overhaul of the football operations of the franchise. The most important change of the upcoming offseason will be at general manager. The selection of who is in charge of the 53-man roster will be a hugely significant move made by the York family that will shape the on-field product for years to come. It's time to look completely outside of the organization to a fresh set of eyes to guide the 49ers out of the substantial hole they've dug...
