Baylor athletic director Ian McCaw flew to California on Monday to interview San Francisco 49ers assistant head coach Mike Singletary the day after firing Guy Morriss, according to a source. McCaw is conducting the search to replace Morriss, who was fired as Baylor's head football coach on Sunday after compiling a five-year record of 18-40. The 49-year-old Singletary, a former Baylor all-American linebacker and NFL Hall of Famer with the Chicago Bears, interviewed for the Baylor job five years ago. But with no coaching experience, Singletary was passed over in favor of...

By The Associated Press Baylor coach Guy Morriss was fired Sunday after the Bears finished their 12th consecutive losing season with their 12th straight Big 12 loss. Click here to find out more! Morriss could not produce a winning record in his five seasons, going 18-40 overall and 7-33 in conference games. He had a year left on his contract. The leading candidate to replace Morriss is Baylor icon Mike Singletary, a linebacker for coach Grant Teaff and the Bears from 1977-80. Singletary was selected to 10 straight Pro Bowls during his 12 seasons with the Chicago Bears and was elected to Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1998. Baylor (3-9, 0-8 Big 12) ended its season with a 45-14 home loss to Oklahoma State on Saturday...

Matt Maiocco is reporting the N.Y. Giants recently inquired about a trade for tackle Kwame Harris. The Giants' offer is believed to be a low-round draft pick, possibly a seventh-rounder for the Harris. The 49ers are likely asking for a conditional draft pick, possibly a fifth-rounder that could move to a fourth-round selection if Harris plays a certain number of...

From Matt Maiocco's blog: There's talk that the 49ers and Dolphins have made contact. The Dolphins own the No. 9 pick, where Levi Brown would be the presumed selection. There was a report out of Houston that the Broncos want to move up to take the Texans' spot at No. 10 to undercut the 49ers from taking Patrick Willis. There is also the possibility the 49ers and Broncos have discussed a trade scenario. The Broncos own the No. 21 selection, and would have to part with their second-round pick, as well as one of their third-round choices. The 49ers and Broncos made a deal last year, in which the 49ers emerged with the first-round selection they used to select Manny Lawson at No....

From Maiocco's blog: the 49ers are not going to let punter Andy Lee get away. The 49ers can thank the Steelers for doing the 49ers' work for them. The Steelers negotiated an unimpressive contract for Lee, who is a restricted free agent. As soon as the 49ers saw the offer sheet - six years, $7.1 million with $1.66 million to sign - they decided to match the deal to retain Lee. They will probably make it official as early as Thursday. "Andy had a nice year for us. We like the development he had," 49ers vice president of player personnel Scot McCloughan said. "We look forward to having that type of player around. We identified guys when we got here and we see him as one of our guys." Lee is planning to get married this weekend, so he'll have some nice...

from PFT's rumour mill: Adam Caplan of Scout.com reports that the 49ers are very interested in Bills cornerback Nate Clements, and that the Niners are prepared to make him an offer soon after 12:01 a.m EST Friday. Clements was franchised by the Bills in 2006. As part of his agreement to sign the one-year tender, the team promised not to slap the tag on him again in 2007. The Browns are believed to be poised to make a quick run at Clements,...

from Matt Maiocco's blog: Niners coach Mike Nolan hired former North Carolina and Fresno State offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti, 41, to replace Jim Hostler as 49ers quarterbacks coach. Hostler was promoted Wednesday to the post of offensive coordinator. "Frank came highly recommended from people throughout all levels of college and professional football," Nolan said. "I am extremely impressed with his work ethic, attention to detail and ability to develop players. He is a perfect fit for the way we operate with the 49ers." Cignetti and Hostler played together in the same defensive backfield at Indiana (Pa.) University. They also worked together in 2001 on the staff of the Saints, whose offensive coordinator was Mike McCarthy....

Robert Talley, who served for the past two seasons as Special Assistant and Assistant Offensive Line Coach for the National Football League's San Francisco 49ers, has been named as Head Football Coach at Stonehill College. Talley, who becomes the sixth Skyhawk varsity mentor in school history, succeeds Chris Woods, who resigned last month to become an assistant coach at Harvard...

Matt Maiocco of The Santa Rose Press Democrat reports: Coach Mike Nolan gave permission to the Bears to interview 49ers offensive assistant/quarterbacks Pep Hamilton for their quarterbacks coach position. The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Hamilton has already interviewed for the job to succeed Wade Wilson. The Ravens' Jedd Fisch is the other candidate for the job. A lot of people might be wondering why Nolan would allow Hamilton, 32, to leave when the 49ers could not get permission from other teams to interview candidates for the offensive coordinator job. Nolan said earlier this offseason he would stand in the way of certain coaches who wanted to further their careers. In Hamilton's case, he worked for the 49ers in an entry-level...

According to PFT's rumour mill: POSTED 7:10 p.m. EST, February 26, 2007 ADALIUS HAS A DEALIO? An industry source tells us that Ravens linebacker Adalius Thomas already has a deal in place with the San Francisco 49ers. Thomas and Niners coach Mike Nolan were together in Baltimore, when Nolan was on Brian Billick's staff. On Sunday, Thomas admitted that the Ravens "don't have the money" to re-sign...

ESPN's Ed Werder reports that 49ers offensive coordinator Norv Turner is the leading candidate to become the next coach of the Dallas Cowboys. Turner interviewed for the job on Sunday, two days after the Niners made a pitch to convince him to stay. He previously served as head coach of the Redskins and Raiders, and offensive coordinator of the Cowboys, Chargers, and Dolphins. The veteran coach surely relishes the opportunity to play the Redskins twice per year, given that he was the first field boss to be fired by Washington owner Dan Snyder. Snyder bought the team prior to the 1999 season, and dumped Turner 13 games into the 2000 campaign, which was a major disappointment for a team that had sky-high expectations after the addition of free agents like Deion...

Matt Maiocco of The Santa Rosa Press Democrat is reporting Niners CB Walt Harris has been officially added to the NFC Pro Bowl team, replacing injured Eagles CB Lito Sheppard, who sustained a dislocated elbow in the Eagles' wild-card playoff game. This will be Harris' first trip to the Pro Bowl, and obviously much-deserved. Earlier this month he was chosen to the All-NFC team, as selected by the Pro Football Writers of America and Pro Football Weekly. Harris tied for the NFC lead with eight interceptions. He also broke up 17 passes, forced five fumbles and recovered two fumbles. He was NFC defensive player of the month for November, and was NFC defensive player of the week for his play in the final game of the season against the...

According to a SF Chronicle article Bryant Young is pleased with the progress the 49ers (7-9) made, defensive tackle Bryant Young said he definitely wants to return for the 2007 season. "I feel healthy and that was key for me, to get through the entire season healthy,'' said Young, the longest-tenured 49er who turns 35 on Jan. 27. "And I like what we did in the offseason, there is a lot to build on. And with the type of guys that we bring in, it's only going to get better.'' The final two years of Young's contract voided after this season because he reached certain playing time incentives. Young, who was a first-round draft pick out of Notre Dame in 1994, believes the 49ers are on track to make the playoffs next season. "I feel...

Matt Maiocoo of the Press Democrat is reporting Bryant Young was the winner of the Len Eshmont Award for the seventh time. He is also one Pro Bowl roster move away from making his fifth trip to Hawaii for the all-star game. Bears DT Tommie Harris was named to the Pro Bowl team, but he is out for the season. Young was the second alternate. Now, he's the first alternate. CB Walt Harris can also earn a trip if one of the NFC's corners is unable to play. * * * The team awards, as announced today are: Len Eshmont Award (inspirational and courageous play) - Bryant Young. Bill Walsh Award (MVP) - Frank Gore, Walt Harris. Bobb McKittrick Award (courage, intensity and sacrifice on the offensive line) - Eric Heitmann. Matt Hazeltine Iron...

Kevin Lynch of the SF Chronicle reports the 49ers had seven players on their post-game injury list, the most this season. With no official determination on their status for next Sunday's game against Green Bay, they are cornerback Donald Strickland (concussion), tackle Adam Snyder (knee sprain, ankle sprain), running backs Michael Robinson (stinger) and Maurice Hicks, defensive tackle Isaac Sopoaga (rib) and linebackers Brandon Moore (knee) and Derrick Smith (hamstring). All but Smith and Snyder were able to return to the...
