Newly vegan Colin Kaepernick looks to add weight before training camp

Jun 18, 2016 at 12:47 PM--

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has given up all foods made from animals. He and his girlfriend, MTV personality and Hot 97 host Nessa, are both vegans now, per Nessa herself.

Kaepernick has been noticeably smaller this offseason, something that has been criticized by the national media. A lot of that is due to being limited in his workout regime following multiple surgeries. "Still working on getting strength throughout my entire body. It's something with three surgeries that it took me a while to get back in the weight room and start lifting and being able to put some of that muscle back on, which is why I'm really excited about this summer and the point that I'm at now," said Kaepernick earlier this month.

RELATED Colin Kaepernick finally speaks: "Every year that I've stepped on the field, it's a competition"

Kaepernick tore a ligament in his throwing hand's thumb during an October 22 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. During his next game, a November 1 matchup against the St. Louis Rams, Kaepernick said that he suffered a bone bruise and cracked cartilage. That game would be his last of the season before being benched in favor of Blaine Gabbert and eventually placed on injured reserve.

Kaepernick practiced for the first time during the last week's mandatory three-day minicamp. While he participated in individual and 7-on-7 drills, he sat out 11-on-11 drills during practices.

When asked how much weight he would like to put back on, Kaepernick said, "That really depends on how training goes and everything like that. There's a pretty substantial amount of weight that I want to put on this summer."

"I don't know exactly how much I need to put on but I need to put on quite a bit. But that's not something I've had a problem with in the past," continued Kaepernick.

The quarterback went on to say that he will be prepared for the team's upcoming training camp in late-July where Kaepernick will battle Gabbert for the starting job.

It's almost too easy to name the quarterback competition among the upcoming San Francisco 49ers training camp battles to watch. With players set to report to the team's facilities in Santa Clara next week, a lot of eyes will be focused on observing the progress of the No. 3 overall pick — quarterback Trey Lance. Should it be among the most intriguing competitions, though? San Francisco's brass has repeatedly stated that Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to be the starter come Week 1. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has a lot of confidence in his veteran quarterback. His availability, not his ability, has always been the concern. That doesn't mean the rookie won't try to prove himself a quick study and unseat Garoppolo. "I definitely see it as Jimmy's the

'This is the best that I've felt physically': 49ers WR Mohamed Sanu ready for training camp competition

Wide receiver Mohamed Sanu is entering his 10th NFL season and hopes to climb the San Francisco 49ers depth chart during training camp, which kicks off this week. Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel figure to be the starters come Week 1. The spots behind them are up for grabs. Sanu's experience may give him an edge, though, when it comes to the No. 3 job. The veteran wideout is already familiar with the offense. He played for head coach Kyle Shanahan, then an offensive coordinator, for a season in Atlanta. That helps. Sanu was briefly with San Francisco last year, appearing in three games but hauling in only one catch for nine yards. He spent the remainder of the season with the Detroit Lions before rejoining the 49ers at the end of March. Sanu says he

Fred Warner says Dee Ford looks great, expects pass rusher to give 49ers a 'huge advantage' in 2021

The San Francisco 49ers will get a boost from the return of pass rusher Nick Bosa this season. The third-year player missed most of last season after suffering a torn ACL during Week 2. The 49ers' pass rush may get another boost in 2021 with the potential return of veteran Dee Ford. According to Fred Warner, it sounds like things are trending in that direction. The star linebacker joined KNBR this morning and was asked for an update on Ford. "Yeah, Dee, he's great," Warner responded. "He looks great. He's back. I've seen him plenty, and he's been working his tail off. I know the type of player that he is, and the fact that he's back healthy is going to give us a huge advantage, so I'm really excited about seeing him back." Ford appeared in just one
