Newly vegan Colin Kaepernick looks to add weight before training camp

Jun 18, 2016 at 12:47 PM--

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has given up all foods made from animals. He and his girlfriend, MTV personality and Hot 97 host Nessa, are both vegans now, per Nessa herself.

Kaepernick has been noticeably smaller this offseason, something that has been criticized by the national media. A lot of that is due to being limited in his workout regime following multiple surgeries. "Still working on getting strength throughout my entire body. It's something with three surgeries that it took me a while to get back in the weight room and start lifting and being able to put some of that muscle back on, which is why I'm really excited about this summer and the point that I'm at now," said Kaepernick earlier this month.

RELATED Colin Kaepernick finally speaks: "Every year that I've stepped on the field, it's a competition"

Kaepernick tore a ligament in his throwing hand's thumb during an October 22 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. During his next game, a November 1 matchup against the St. Louis Rams, Kaepernick said that he suffered a bone bruise and cracked cartilage. That game would be his last of the season before being benched in favor of Blaine Gabbert and eventually placed on injured reserve.

Kaepernick practiced for the first time during the last week's mandatory three-day minicamp. While he participated in individual and 7-on-7 drills, he sat out 11-on-11 drills during practices.

When asked how much weight he would like to put back on, Kaepernick said, "That really depends on how training goes and everything like that. There's a pretty substantial amount of weight that I want to put on this summer."

"I don't know exactly how much I need to put on but I need to put on quite a bit. But that's not something I've had a problem with in the past," continued Kaepernick.

The quarterback went on to say that he will be prepared for the team's upcoming training camp in late-July where Kaepernick will battle Gabbert for the starting job.

Kyle Shanahan feels "really fortunate" with 49ers' QB room

By David Bonilla
May 24

Kyle Shanahan praises his quarterback room every year. Last season, the San Francisco 49ers went through three starting quarterbacks and still made it to the NFC Championship Game. Trey Lance was the Week 1 starter but suffered a season-ending ankle injury during his second game. Eleven weeks later, Jimmy Garoppolo sustained a broken foot. That opened the door for rookie Brock Purdy to show his coaches and the NFL world that he belonged, despite being the last overall pick in the draft. Purdy guided the 49ers to eight consecutive wins before suffering a severe injury in that NFC title game matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. Two of the quarterbacks from last season—Lance and Purdy—remain. Both are just 23 years old. They are joined by Sam

5 position battles to watch for during 49ers OTAs

By Rohan Chakravarthi
May 24

The San Francisco 49ers entered the offseason with several questions after key figures, such as Jimmie Ward, Mike McGlinchey, Samson Ebukam, and Charles Omenihu, departed in free agency, creating the possibility for position battles in organized team activities(OTAs) and training camp. While several of the starting spots are solidified, there are still a few position battles to watch, as well as depth questions that could allow younger players to compete and take 53-man roster spots at the end of the offseason. Let's break down some of those battles to watch and how they could play out for the 49ers, outside of the obvious competition at
