Newly vegan Colin Kaepernick looks to add weight before training camp

Jun 18, 2016 at 12:47 PM--

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has given up all foods made from animals. He and his girlfriend, MTV personality and Hot 97 host Nessa, are both vegans now, per Nessa herself.

Kaepernick has been noticeably smaller this offseason, something that has been criticized by the national media. A lot of that is due to being limited in his workout regime following multiple surgeries. "Still working on getting strength throughout my entire body. It's something with three surgeries that it took me a while to get back in the weight room and start lifting and being able to put some of that muscle back on, which is why I'm really excited about this summer and the point that I'm at now," said Kaepernick earlier this month.

RELATED Colin Kaepernick finally speaks: "Every year that I've stepped on the field, it's a competition"

Kaepernick tore a ligament in his throwing hand's thumb during an October 22 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. During his next game, a November 1 matchup against the St. Louis Rams, Kaepernick said that he suffered a bone bruise and cracked cartilage. That game would be his last of the season before being benched in favor of Blaine Gabbert and eventually placed on injured reserve.

Kaepernick practiced for the first time during the last week's mandatory three-day minicamp. While he participated in individual and 7-on-7 drills, he sat out 11-on-11 drills during practices.

When asked how much weight he would like to put back on, Kaepernick said, "That really depends on how training goes and everything like that. There's a pretty substantial amount of weight that I want to put on this summer."

"I don't know exactly how much I need to put on but I need to put on quite a bit. But that's not something I've had a problem with in the past," continued Kaepernick.

The quarterback went on to say that he will be prepared for the team's upcoming training camp in late-July where Kaepernick will battle Gabbert for the starting job.

The San Francisco 49ers invested a lot to acquire quarterback Trey Lance. The team is unlikely to admit any wrongdoing there. Not yet, at least. That's not to say that Lance can't develop into a competent starter for the Bay Area squad. The team obviously believes that to be possible, having decided he was the Week 1 starter early last offseason. Circumstances have changed, though. Brock Purdy has taken the NFL by storm, surprising even those who drafted him with the No. 262 overall pick. Lance went down in Week 2, elevating Jimmy Garoppolo into the starting role. That lasted until Week 13 when Garoppolo went down with a broken foot. Enter Brock Purdy and the birth of a continuously accelerating hype train. Some expected the rookie

There are no more guaranteed games, but there's football to be played, and right now is the time to exult in it. No matter who you root for, you can imagine your team finding a way to win, a way to keep playing football, and filling your February with excitement and joy. Right now, there's nothing standing between your team and glory except the vagaries of chance and a well-fought effort this weekend, and hopefully the next. And for those of you who aren't rooting for a team that's made it this far, never fear. 7 of the 14 playoff entrants this year didn't make it into the dance last year. The
