Newly vegan Colin Kaepernick looks to add weight before training camp

Jun 18, 2016 at 12:47 PM--

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has given up all foods made from animals. He and his girlfriend, MTV personality and Hot 97 host Nessa, are both vegans now, per Nessa herself.

Kaepernick has been noticeably smaller this offseason, something that has been criticized by the national media. A lot of that is due to being limited in his workout regime following multiple surgeries. "Still working on getting strength throughout my entire body. It's something with three surgeries that it took me a while to get back in the weight room and start lifting and being able to put some of that muscle back on, which is why I'm really excited about this summer and the point that I'm at now," said Kaepernick earlier this month.

RELATED Colin Kaepernick finally speaks: "Every year that I've stepped on the field, it's a competition"

Kaepernick tore a ligament in his throwing hand's thumb during an October 22 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. During his next game, a November 1 matchup against the St. Louis Rams, Kaepernick said that he suffered a bone bruise and cracked cartilage. That game would be his last of the season before being benched in favor of Blaine Gabbert and eventually placed on injured reserve.

Kaepernick practiced for the first time during the last week's mandatory three-day minicamp. While he participated in individual and 7-on-7 drills, he sat out 11-on-11 drills during practices.

When asked how much weight he would like to put back on, Kaepernick said, "That really depends on how training goes and everything like that. There's a pretty substantial amount of weight that I want to put on this summer."

"I don't know exactly how much I need to put on but I need to put on quite a bit. But that's not something I've had a problem with in the past," continued Kaepernick.

The quarterback went on to say that he will be prepared for the team's upcoming training camp in late-July where Kaepernick will battle Gabbert for the starting job.

49ers players say Jimmy Garoppolo looks 'real good' and has improved since last week

By Kirk Larrabee

Jimmy Garoppolo's playing status against the Los Angeles Rams this week probably won't be known until gameday, but it sounds like he's been making visible strides in practice, based on what his teammates said Thursday. Garoppolo sat out last week's win over the Houston Texans in favor of rookie Trey Lance due to a thumb injury that may or may not require surgery in the offseason, but he's been back at practice this week as the 49ers prepare for their season finale in Los Angeles (4:25 p.m. ET/1:25 p.m. PT, FOX). He was naturally a popular topic of conversation during post-practice media sessions on Thursday, with reporters wanting to know the players'

Trent Williams returned to practice on Thursday after missing last week's and Wednesday's sessions. The newly named All-Pro offensive lineman was back on the practice field on Friday, with the team scheduled to board a plane for the Dallas area this afternoon. Williams is dealing with an elbow injury that forced him to miss the San Francisco 49ers' regular-season finale against the Los Angeles Rams. "He looks to be good to go for Sunday's game," wrote Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area. All-Pro LT Trent

Steve Young envisions 49ers playoff win, jokingly looks past Cowboys

On Sunday, the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys meet in the playoffs for the first time in 27 years. There are five other playoff games in the Wild Card round, but this matchup may be one of the most talked-about this weekend. Half of Fame quarterback and 49ers legend Steve Young has a good feeling about his former team's chances against the Cowboys. He joined KNBR this week to discuss the much-hyped bout between old rivals. "I've got a good feeling [about this game]," Young said on KNBR's Tolbert, Krueger & Brooks show. "I've got a feeling the Cowboys might come out fast, but there's just a grittiness [to the 49ers]. I think [the Cowboys are] going to get beat down. Then we get to go renew all the Packer games from '95, '96, '97, '98. Then we

49ers' Deebo Samuel to Kyle Shanahan before TD run vs. Cowboys: 'Just give me the ball. I got you.'

By David Bonilla
Jan 16

Deebo Samuel has become a very confident player for the San Francisco 49ers. He is willing to do whatever it takes to get the football in his hands and make a play. Samuel is a wide receiver but lines up as a running back too. He led the 49ers with eight rushing touchdowns this season. Samuel had another rushing touchdown during Sunday's 23-17 playoff win against the Dallas Cowboys. That one was impressive, as it involved Samuel improvising on the play and turning back inside to get into the end zone. That wasn't how the play was drawn up, by the way. How did Deebo even find this hole? 😱
