The NFL power rankings for Week 2 illustrate the sports media's split over the 49ers after their blowout-turned-nail-biter victory over the Lions. If you're confused about the San Francisco 49ers after their 41-33 victory over the Detroit Lions in Week 1, you are not alone. In Week 2, NFL "Power Rankers" fell into one of two general camps as it relates to San Francisco: Those who think the 49ers took a clear step forward as they trounced the Lions over the first three quarters of Sunday's contest, and those who, after witnessing the Lions' improbable comeback attempt expectedly fall short, don't quite know what to think. They are clearly the favorite among that staff. Coming in with the second-most selections, though, are the San Francisco 49ers. Five contributors—Kevin Patra, Adam Rank, Gregg Rosenthal, Marc Sessler, and Lance Zierlein—have Kyle Shanahan's squad winning the whole thing. Two—Patra and Sessler—have San Francisco beating the Buffalo Bills. Rank has the Cleveland Browns as the Super Bowl runner-up. Rosenthal has the Niners topping the Baltimore Ravens, avenging Super Bowl 47.

One question that remains, however, is who will be returning punts? Most believe second-year wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk would be the most effective punt returner. He did it in college, and has game-breaking ability. But do you really want one of your star wideouts returning punts, and increasing his chances of being injured? Head coach Kyle Shanahan addressed the topic this week. In an interview with

The San Francisco 49ers have signed tight end Tanner Hudson, linebacker Rashad Smith, cornerback Dee Virgin, and wide receiver Isaiah Zuber to the team's practice squad. On Wednesday, general manager John Lynch confirmed that Hudson and Virgin had agreed to sign, but both still needed to travel to Santa Clara and pass physicals. "Jordan Matthews is on our practice squad," Lynch said via a conference call. "We didn't plan on having another tight end being a part of that but had some discussions with Tanner. He's a guy we've had our eye on for a while. I think there was a lot of conjecture that he would make Tampa's 53. When he didn't, we took a shot at it, and we were able to get him to come with us. So, we're excited about that. "And then with Dee
