By Brian Renick
Jan 11

The San Francisco 49ers are heading back to the playoffs for the first time since their 2019 Super Bowl run after a thrilling Week 18 overtime victory against the NFC West champion Los Angeles Rams. The 49ers were a 13-3 powerhouse in 2019, earning the #1 seed and a first-round bye, but this 2021 version, a 10-game winner and the 6th seed, may actually be better positioned to win it all than the 2019 squad. Let's compare the offensive position groups from each season to see who has the edge. Quarterback 2019 Jimmy Garoppolo 16 games, 329/476 69.1%, 3978 yds, 27 TDs and 13 INTs, 2.7 INT% Nick Mullens 2021 Jimmy Garoppolo 15 games,

Keep in mind there are still a lot of unknowns here, including (as of Sunday morning) whether or not the 49ers will even get this opportunity when they battle in the NFC Championship next Sunday (6:40 p.m. ET/3:40 p.m. PT, FOX). But based on what Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said Saturday night to go with what's been reported about Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady over the past 24 hours, it's not incorrect to say the 49ers could conceivably be the team to

49ers' playoff-clinching win vs. Rams has added meaning for me

I was 16 years old when the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys last met in the playoffs. Twenty-seven years later, they are preparing to do so again. I remember watching the seasons leading up to that one and seeing my father frustrated by previous playoff exits at the hands of the Cowboys. I occasionally watched, rooting on the Bay Area team because of my father. It brought him joy, as it would for me in the years that followed. However, there was something different about that 1994 campaign, and my father knew it. The 49ers were on a mission, loading up on talent and setting their sights on
