Breer: 49ers started looking into drafting a quarterback after the season ended

The San Francisco 49ers knew a change was needed immediately after the 2020 season ended. At one point, the team had Super Bowl aspirations. The team ended up finishing with just six wins. Much of that had to do with the unprecedented number of injuries the roster endured. Much of that had to do with the unavailability of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. NFL officially expands regular-season schedule to 17 games per team, creating 49ers at Bengals matchup

Big changes are in store for the upcoming season. Today, the NFL announced that the regular-season schedule for each team would include 17 games rather than the 16-game schedules that have been a staple since 1978. McShay: Mac Jones won't start over Jimmy Garoppolo Week 1 if 49ers draft him

The argument for Mac Jones over some other quarterback prospects at No. 3 overall is that the former Alabama player might be among the most ready to step in and play. Some feel that Justin Fields of Ohio State or Trey Lance of North Dakota State could benefit from sitting and learning for a year. Much of that has to do with the system within which Jones played last year. Fields and Lance are viewed as having higher ceilings than Jones, though. They may be better long-term prospects. ESPN's Todd McShay released his latest mock draft and has the San Francisco 49ers selecting Jones with their top pick. That
