Source says that 49ers will select A.J. Hawk over Vernon Davis

Apr 26, 2006 at 2:07 PM--

According to Scout.com, a league source has indicated that the San Francisco 49ers will select Ohio State linebacker A.J. Hawk over Maryland tight end Vernon Davis if both players are available at the No. 6 selection in the first round.

It is unknown how reliable this "league source" is and rumors often run wild during the week leading to the NFL Draft as the media attempts to guess what teams will do.

While Hawk would fill a more immediate need, Davis has been described as a player that the team can't pass up on. The addition of Davis would add another big and fast target for young quarterback Alex Smith.

It has been well known that these two players have been at the top of San Francisco's wish list. However, most figured that it was in the reverse order with Davis as the 49ers' first choice.

Jerry Jones: Win over 49ers would be 'inspiring' for Cowboys

By David Bonilla

In the eyes of many NFL observers, the San Francisco 49ers currently wear the crown of the league's finest. The 49ers have ousted the Dallas Cowboys from the playoffs in each of the last two postseasons, setting up a pivotal Week 5 matchup between the two NFC heavyweights. Even though it's just a regular-season game, a win over the team that has repeatedly dashed their postseason hopes would be deeply meaningful for the Cowboys. It's an opportunity for Dallas to prove they are true Super Bowl contenders. "I look at it as we know they're one of, if not the team that is playing the best right now," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said this week on 105.3 The Fan, per

The San Francisco 49ers defeated the New York Giants in a Thursday Night Football matchup during Week 3, notching a 30-12 victory in their home opener to improve to 3-0. San Francisco was dominant in all three areas of the field, consistently leading by two scores due to another strong offensive performance, matched by a defense that held the Giants to just 12 points overall. Despite the short week, the 49ers earned major contributions from defensive end Nick Bosa, who recorded a sack and six pressures in only 39 snaps due to the Giants' lack of offensive plays. Bosa's health has been an underrated factor through three weeks, as the defensive end was acclimated heavily in Week 2, playing 63 defensive snaps, which was a significant uptick from Week
