Everyone is excited to see Kyle Shanahan deviate from what many assumed to be his prototype quarterback and go with a potentially dynamic playmaker in Trey Lance with the No. 3 overall pick. Fans are eager to see what the head coach and play-caller does with his new versatile weapon. The former North Dakota State quarterback is equally eager to see how Shanahan utilizes his talents. "He makes it work," Lance said of Shanahan during a one-on-one conversation with 49ers team reporter Keiana Martin on Thursday night. "Obviously, what he does on the field, his football mind, just the little bit I have gotten to talk to him, you can see it. And everyone in that organization is that way, so I'm

Inability to add a free agent QB influenced 49ers' draft plans, says analyst

The San Francisco 49ers were shopping around for veteran free agents this offseason. It was assumed the team wanted a security blanket behind Jimmy Garoppolo, should he be sidelined again during the upcoming season. Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network believes the plan was different, though. The analyst feels that San Francisco sought more than a veteran clipboard holder, who could enter a game if needed. He believes the Niners were ready to move Garoppolo if they found the right veteran signal-caller to replace him. "If the Niners end up taking Mac Jones over Trey Lance, which is the way it looks as of right now, it's because of what they could not accomplish during the offseason,"

La Canfora: Strong expectation among NFL GMs that 49ers try to trade Jimmy Garoppolo this week

By David Bonilla
Apr 27, 2021

The San Francisco 49ers have repeatedly stated that quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo remains in the team's plans for 2021. That would mean a rookie sitting behind him for at least the upcoming season, which makes sense. The 49ers are built to win now and have shown they can do so with Garoppolo at the helm. However, his durability has become a concern after missing 23 games over the past three seasons. Maybe that won't remain the plan. Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that there is a "very strong" expectation around the league that San Francisco will make an effort to trade Garoppolo before or even during the draft. "Timing isn't great with 5 QBs about to go in 1st round, but Jimmy G's future there now seen as bleak," wrote La Canfora via
