Alex Smith replaces Hill at quarterback

Quarterback Alex Smith has replaced starter Shaun Hill in the San Francisco 49ers game against the Houston Texans.

During the first half with Hill at the helm, the 49ers only gained 50 total yards and trailed 21-0 at halftime.

Alex came in after halftime and lead the team in a touchdown drive ending in a pass to tight end Vernon Davis.

Smith returned to the football field in 2020, earning NFL Comeback Player of the Year honors before retiring last offseason. On Saturday, Smith shared the story of his family's latest struggle. In May, his daughter, Sloane, had to undergo brain surgery to remove a large and rare type of cancerous tumor. The good news is that neurosurgeons removed the entire tumor, and it sounds like Sloane is recovering well. Smith
