There's growing buzz around the San Francisco 49ers quarterback situation, with Mac Jones stepping in for an injured Brock Purdy (toe) and leading the team to a gritty overtime win over the Los Angeles Rams. That victory marked Jones' third win in as many starts this season, sparking debate over whether the 49ers should continue riding the hot hand, even if Purdy is close to returning.
Purdy may not be at 100% by the time the 49ers travel to Raymond James Stadium to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 6. That could open the door for Jones to make his fourth consecutive start—something many fans are on board with after watching his efficient play at SoFi Stadium.
Respected NFL analyst Brian Baldinger believes the 49ers shouldn't rush Purdy back onto the field.
"If he's 95%, why put him out there?" Baldinger said Tuesday on Bay Area radio station 95.7 The Game. "Why not [continue playing Jones] until you're absolutely certain that he's 100%? And if Mac wins a fourth game, against a very good Tampa team, then I would definitely leave him in at this point.
"I believe in riding the hot hand. It just happens. You're not trying to usurp somebody, but your job is to win as many games as you possibly can, however you do it, and you cannot be worried about any player egos or anything else."
Of course, Jones' own health is also a factor. The quarterback endured a physical battle in Week 5, leaving him limited during Monday's bonus practice. His workload on Wednesday will provide more clarity on his availability for Sunday.
Statistically, Jones has impressed in his three starts, completing 66.7% of his passes for 905 yards, six touchdowns, and just one interception. In comparison, Purdy has completed 65.8% of his throws for 586 yards with four touchdowns and four interceptions in two games this season.
"Mac's playing great football right now," Baldinger added. "And so, I wouldn't be in a hurry to make that change."
