Christian McCaffrey's 2024 season didn't unfold as he had hoped. The San Francisco 49ers running back missed the first eight games due to Achilles tendinitis. He returned to action in November, only to suffer another setback in his fourth game back—a PCL injury that sidelined him for the final five games of the season.
Despite the challenges, McCaffrey appears to be on the mend. The 49ers star recently shared vacation photos on Instagram, which included glimpses of his recovery progress.
After the season, McCaffrey expressed optimism about his recovery. He shared that he was "progressing really well" and even believed he could have returned to play if the 49ers had made the playoffs. Unfortunately, McCaffrey wasn't the only player to suffer a setback. Injuries plagued the team throughout the season, contributing to their disappointing 6-11 record.
During that conversation earlier this month, McCaffrey estimated he was already "definitely close" to 100 percent.
"We're trending in the right direction, just with available time now, and we just want to respect that whole process," McCaffrey added. "But everything's going really well."
Limited playing time left McCaffrey with modest stats for the season—348 scrimmage yards on 65 touches across four games, with no touchdowns.
As for what caused his setbacks in 2024, McCaffrey admitted he's unsure but is focused on returning to his NFL Offensive Player of the Year form.
"I think my mindset right now is just get to where I'm feeling 100 percent as quick as possible, to make the adjustments where needed, and come back ready to go for OTAs," McCaffrey stated.
McCaffrey added that his initial injury, the Achilles tendinitis, is no longer a concern.
