Trent Williams believes the San Francisco 49ers struck gold when they selected Brock Purdy with the last overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. By the end of his rookie season, the former Iowa State quarterback had become a household name, leading the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game. In his second season, Purdy set a single-season franchise record with 4,280 passing yards.
Purdy has already accumulated 1,130 passing yards this year, putting him on pace for around 4,800 yards—well beyond the record he set last season. Despite his accomplishments, Purdy still faces skepticism. However, inside the 49ers' locker room, no one questions that much of the team's recent success can be credited to the third-year quarterback.
Williams joined the "Rich Eisen Show" on Tuesday, offering high praise for his 24-year-old teammate. He emphasized that Purdy has already proven himself an elite leader and expressed confusion as to why anyone would still doubt him.
"If you look at him long enough, what you see is what you get," Williams told Eisen. "He's laser-focused. He's an outstanding leader. He's a guy that a lot of people draw confidence from, especially being the signal-caller. He's an extremely, extremely bright individual, extremely high-IQ football player.
"I think all of those things, it's pretty evident when you watch him play, so I don't know if I'm telling you anything you don't know. But he's just an outstanding quarterback. We won the lottery."
Williams, Purdy, and the 49ers are currently 2-2, aiming to climb above .500 with a win over the Arizona Cardinals this weekend.
