The San Francisco 49ers are set to conclude their offseason program with a two-day mandatory minicamp. Initially scheduled for June 4-6, the team plans to eliminate the final day of on-field work, as has been customary in recent years.
All eyes will be on the lookout for two players who have been absent during organized team activities (OTAs)—wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and running back Christian McCaffrey.
Aiyuk awaits a contract extension that will make him one of the highest-paid receivers in the NFL. The Minnesota Vikings just made wide receiver Justin Jefferson the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history, reportedly signing him to a four-year extension worth up to $140 million, including $110 million guaranteed.
Aiyuk is slated to earn $14.124 million in 2024 on a team-exercised fifth-year option. While his new deal may not reach the reported $35 million average of Jefferson's contract, he should catapult higher up the salary rankings.
McCaffrey is currently the NFL's highest-paid running back, earning an average of about $16 million a year. He has long advocated for higher pay for NFL running backs, considering their production and the physical toll of the position.
Notably, there has been no confirmation that McCaffrey's absence is financially motivated. Whether or not he attends this week's mandatory minicamp could be telling.
After this week's mandatory minicamp, players will enjoy time off and are not obligated to report back to the 49ers until training camp, which typically begins in the latter half of July.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan and defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen are scheduled to speak with the media this week. The 49ers will make the press conferences available at 49ers.com, on the team's official mobile app, and YouTube page.
