In the aftermath of Sunday's
27-14 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed Monday morning that his All-Pro safety,
Talanoa Hufanga,
sustained a torn ACL. That is a significant loss for the defense, but the coaching staff is confident in third-round draft pick
Ji'Ayir Brown's ability to fill the void for the remainder of the season.
"That's one of the reasons we went for him," Shanahan said via a conference call. "We knew we needed some depth there, and the coolest thing about him ... I think you heard it from guys yesterday, but the way he's been practicing here every week, he's been practicing like he knew this moment was coming.
"He's been locked in extremely impressive for a rookie, and I think that's why he was ready for his moment last night and made some big plays that helped us win. So excited for him for his opportunity, but really bummed about Huf."
Despite a somewhat shaky start that saw Brown conceding a 41-yard catch leading to a one-yard touchdown run by Buccaneers running back Rachaad White, the rookie rebounded. He later broke up a touchdown pass to Mike Evans with 6:39 remaining in the game and even came away with a Baker Mayfield interception in the end zone.
As for Hufanga, Shanahan was excited about his 23-year-old safety's contributions this season, something that will now have to wait until 2024.
"I thought he started [the season] out well," Shanahan said of Hufanga. "I thought he hit a little lull during the season in our skid, and I thought he played one of his best games versus Jacksonville, and I thought the same thing was going to happen here [against Tampa Bay]. But I thought he was going to end up having a real good year."

Deebo Samuel expresses confidence in 49ers' return to winning ways
San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel spoke to NFL Network's Omar Ruiz after the team's impressive Thanksgiving win over the division-rival Seattle Seahawks. The 49ers have rebounded nicely from their recent losing streak, securing three consecutive wins since their bye week.
One advantage of playing on Thursday night is enjoying the extra time off before returning to the grind on Monday. That's when the team will begin preparing for its NFC Championship Game rematch against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Asked about the key to the 49ers' resurgence, Samuel told Ruiz, "Just come out here and play Niner football—fast, physical, and just be on task."

49ers roster moves: Talanoa Hufanga placed on IR, O-lineman added
The San Francisco 49ers announced that safety Talanoa Hufanga has been placed on injured reserve after suffering a torn ACL on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. To fill Hufanga's roster spot, the team signed offensive lineman Ben Bartch off the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad to a one-year deal.
The 49ers Communications staff provided the following rundown.
Bartch (6-6, 315) was originally drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the fourth round (116th overall) of the 2020 NFL Draft. Throughout his four-year career with the Jaguars (2020-23), he has appeared in 41 games (20 starts). In 2023, he appeared in eight games and made three starts. Bartch was waived by Jacksonville on October 31, 2023, and signed to the team's
49ers mailbag: Who replaces Hufanga? Which players need to step up? Did Danny Gray fall out of favor?
It's an exciting time to be a fan of the San Francisco 49ers. And if you asked fans what they're most thankful for, when it comes to the team, you'd get a variety of answers, mostly players and coaches. But one thing all fans can be thankful for is that Jed York has allowed Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch to do what they want. What those two have done has the 49ers far removed from the bleak days in Santa Clara before they arrived.
So there's a lot to be thankful for if you're a fan of the 49ers. Speaking of those fans, we opened up the 49ers Webzone Mailbag to grab your questions. So let's jump in and see what questions we can answer:

Why 49ers' Brock Purdy has 'all the confidence in the world' in Brandon Aiyuk
Brock Purdy strengthened his chemistry with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk during training camp, after the San Francisco 49ers quarterback returned to practice following offseason surgery on his throwing arm.
That quarterback-receiver chemistry has only improved as the season has progressed. On Sunday, Aiyuk caught five passes for a career-high 156 yards and a touchdown against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It was his fourth game of the season with over 100 receiving yards.
"He's different from [WR] Deebo [Samuel]. He's different from [TE] George [Kittle]," quarterback Brock Purdy told reporters on Tuesday. "And so, sort of just taking note of that. And then B.A.'s just got length. He's got range. And so I know where he can get to and where I shouldn't throw the ball
