Pro Football Focus
awarded the San Francisco 49ers a grade of C for the team's offseason efforts. All 31 NFL teams earned higher marks for their efforts to improve their rosters.
It could have been a lot worse, though. The analytics site was not fond of the 49ers' moves in the draft. If not for one key offseason addition, San Francisco's grade might have been even lower.
"The addition of
Javon Hargrave to an already dominant defense is the only thing saving this from a very bad offseason grade," wrote Sam Monson. "Hargrave accounted for 57 total pressures last season for the Eagles, more than double any 49ers interior lineman.
Clelin Ferrell is a far more quietly solid addition to the defensive front, and
Sam Darnold could easily end up starting at quarterback if
Brock Purdy's elbow doesn't heal quickly enough."
While the 49ers entered the draft with 11 picks and finished with nine, they didn't own a selection in the first, second, or fourth rounds. That was significant to evaluators. Then, drafting a kicker—
Jake Moody out of Michigan—in the third round wasn't popular among analysts.
"In the draft, it's difficult to argue that anything the 49ers did was the result of good process," wrote Monson. "They reached relative to the PFF and consensus big boards at most picks and drafted a kicker in the third round."
Despite the poor postseason marks, most consider the 49ers among the most talented rosters in the NFL and contenders in the NFC. San Francisco ranked No. 3, behind only the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles, in
Pro Football Focus' most recent power rankings.
"The 49ers needed backup linebackers and cornerbacks after losing Azeez Al-Shaair, Emmanuel Moseley, and Samson Ebukam this offseason," wrote Amelia Probst and Arjun Menon. "Drafting
Darrell Luter Jr.,
Dee Winters, and
Jalen Graham may fill those gaps — particularly Luter, who allowed a 27% completion percentage in 2021."
As for the rest of the NFC West, Monson liked what the Seattle Seahawks did to improve, handing out an A to the 49ers' rival. The Los Angeles Rams and Arizona Cardinals each earned a B.

DT Javon Hargrave signing with 49ers paying off immediately for both sides
By Rohan Chakravarthi

The San Francisco 49ers have started off the season hot, improving to 3-0 fresh off a Thursday Night victory over the New York Giants this week in their home opener.
It's been a two-sided effort for the 49ers, who have scored 30 points in each of the team's three games, while limiting opponents to 42 points overall.
A big portion of their defensive success? The talent on their defensive line, and this season, it has been headlined by star defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, who leads the team with 10 quarterback hurries.
Coming into the season, it was known that Hargrave was a premier pass-rushing talent for the 49ers, but he's been on a tear to start the season, arguably serving as the team's best player on that end, which is exactly what San Francisco
49ers Notebook: The turning point vs. Rams; Aaron Donald MIA; McCaffrey on jawing with former Niner; Deebo's very unexpected fan encounter
Another regular season game, another win for the 49ers, who now have a streak of 12 consecutive regular season wins in a row after knocking off the Rams 30-23 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood on Sunday. The win was also the ninth straight regular season win over the Rams, who put up a fight for much of the game before the 49ers took over late.
Things weren't going all that well in the first half for the 49ers, who were trailing 17-10 in the second quarter before a couple of key decisions from head coach Kyle Shanahan helped turn the tide. We're going to talk about those moments in this edition of 49ers Notebook, as well as a run-in that Christian McCaffrey had with a former 49er, a weird encounter between Deebo Samuel and a fan, and more.

John Lynch: Brandon Aiyuk's status for 49ers-Giants remains "very fluid," could be game-time decision
This week's focus remains on San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. The team has a short week to prepare for its next opponent—the New York Giants on Thursday night at Levi's Stadium. The matchup comes just four days after the Niners' 30-23 win over the Los Angeles Rams.
Aiyuk suffered a shoulder injury on his first catch, a 13-yard reception during San Francisco's opening drive. He was in and out of the lineup throughout the game and was limited during the 49ers' light Tuesday practice.
On Tuesday, head coach Kyle Shanahan said that the decision will come down to how Aiyuk feels and the evaluation from the training staff. It sounds like the receiver may end up being a
49ers' Kyle Shanahan: Javon Kinlaw's hard work showing up on the film
All offseason, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan expressed confidence in fourth-year defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw despite the team not exercising the player's fifth-year option. It was certainly more confidence than fans had in the former first-round draft pick.
Kinlaw had missed 24 games over the past two seasons. He underwent reconstructive knee surgery in 2021. A setback last season forced Kinlaw to miss 11 games. Fans were ready to label the defensive lineman a "bust." Some already had.
The defensive lineman just could not stay on the football field.
Kinlaw is finally healthy, though, and making his presence known. The defensive tackle is on pace for his best Pro Football Focus grade after an unimpressive first three NFL seasons.
