Why the 49ers involved Kris Kocurek in Steve Wilks interview
Ensuring a smooth transition from DeMeco Ryans to his replacement was a priority for the San Francisco 49ers. It was so crucial that head coach Kyle Shanahan wanted to involve at least one valued member of the defensive coaching staff.
Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports that the 49ers had defensive line coach Kris Kocurek spend time with Steve Wilks during his interview on Monday before hiring the former Carolina Panthers interim head coach as the team's new defensive coordinator.
Barrows notes that continuing to run the Wide 9 and ensuring the coaching personalities meshed well together was a top priority for the Niners.
Josina Anderson reported that the 49ers were mulling over the
possibility of promoting Kocurek to defensive coordinator before interviewing Wilks. However, Kocurek has never expressed a desire to move past coaching defensive lines.
"D-line is my passion," Kocurek said last year. "… When I was younger, first three or four years in the league, I took every single note I could possibly take on coverages and all this stuff, and then I'd be taking notes on coverages, and I was watching the D-line. Since I was in middle school, I've always put my hand in the ground, something I have a passion for and something that I really don't see changing."
When asked what he was looking for in a new defensive coordinator, Shanahan stressed maintaining continuity within the coaching staff.
"
I love our defensive staff. I love our defense," Shanahan said. "I'm trying to get something where we don't have to turn much over. I would love to keep our same staff, so I'm going to talk to some guys on our staff. I'm going to talk to some guys outside of our staff, and hopefully, whichever way we decide to go, whether we bring in a new guy or not, that it's someone who can work with who we have and what we've accomplished here because I love the scheme that we run.
"And I feel the foundation we have on the D-line, at linebacker, at corner, at safety, I think our players fit very well in it too, so I'm hoping to find someone who fits with us personality-wise and scheme-wise."
The 49ers also interviewed former Washington Commanders defensive backs coach Chris Harris and Shanahan reportedly spoke with Vic Fangio, who accepted the Miami Dolphins' defensive coordinator job.

Why Trey Lance faces uphill battle to win 49ers' starting job, per Kyle Shanahan
The San Francisco 49ers expect Brock Purdy to be ready to play between early September and early November. That's a significant range considering the 2023 NFL season begins in early September. Head coach Kyle Shanahan, speaking with reporters at the NFL owners' meetings in Arizona, said the team expects its 23-year-old quarterback's recovery from his March 10 surgery to be six to eight months.
The 49ers will know more in June, when Purdy begins throwing again and starts ramping up his workload as part of his rehab.
"It might be Week 1," Shanahan said. "I think I'm hearing, at the latest, Week 4. But that's just all estimations, and we'll see what
Why decision to return to 49ers was easy for Jake Brendel; Center discusses Javon Hargrave signing
Jake Brendel had suitors in free agency. Several teams, including the San Francisco 49ers, were interested in the veteran center. Ultimately, much to the delight of fans, he returned to the Niners, his NFL home since 2020.
Brendel played 1,252 snaps this past season, by far the most of his career. His 62.9 overall, 71.8 pass-blocking, and 61.9 run-blocking Pro Football Focus grades were each the second-highest of his career.
Despite being in the league since 2016, Brendel played just 250 total snaps before this past season, so he lacks the wear and tear of most 30-year-old offensive linemen. The center still feels like his career is just getting started, and his play is on the rise.
"Honestly, I

49ers considered trading Mike McGlinchey last year
Mike McGlinchey received a life-changing payday, signing a five-year, $87.5 million deal with the Denver Broncos. The offensive tackle has known for a while that he would not return to the San Francisco 49ers, the only NFL team he has played for and the one that made him the No. 9 overall pick in 2018.
General manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan made it clear to McGlinchey that he was likely playing his final months for the team. There was too much money invested in other spots, and the 49ers knew they couldn't compete with other interested teams.
Behind the scenes, Lynch and Shanahan kept McGlinchey in the loop of what the team was thinking, and everything pointed to the tackle playing elsewhere in 2023 … maybe even
