Vic Fangio officially joins Dolphins the day after Kyle Shanahan preaches defensive continuity for 49ers

Feb 2, 2023 at 8:26 AM--

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Vic Fangio will be joining the Miami Dolphins as their defensive coordinator after all. It was something that was reported earlier in the week. However, the coach denied that anything was official, leading to speculation that he awaited news of the San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator job opening up.

It did. This week, the Houston Texans hired DeMeco Ryans as their new head coach, leaving the 49ers searching for his replacement. Unfortunately, that won't be Fangio.

Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports that head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with Fangio about replacing Ryans, which was assumed when Fangio's name surfaced as a candidate to join the 49ers' staff.

On Wednesday, Shanahan was asked what he is looking for in a new defensive coordinator.

"I love our defensive staff. I love our defense," Shanahan said. "I'm trying to get something where we don't have to turn much over. I would love to keep our same staff, so I'm going to talk to some guys on our staff. I'm going to talk to some guys outside of our staff, and hopefully, whichever way we decide to go, whether we bring in a new guy or not, that it's someone who can work with who we have and what we've accomplished here because I love the scheme that we run.

"And I feel the foundation we have on the D-line, at linebacker, at corner, at safety, I think our players fit very well in it too, so I'm hoping to find someone who fits with us personality-wise and scheme-wise."

Maybe Fangio didn't fit what Shanahan wanted to do. Or perhaps the Dolphins simply outbid the 49ers. Whatever the reason, San Francisco's search continues. They have requested permission to interview Carolina Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilks and Washington Commanders defensive backs coach Chris Harris about their defensive coordinator vacancy.

By Site Staff
Mar 23

The San Francisco 49ers officially announced the hirings of Steve Wilks as defensive coordinator, Klint Kubiak as offensive passing game specialist, Jacob Webster as defensive quality control coach, and Max Molz as coaching operations assistant. The Wilks and Kubiak hirings have been known since February but were never officially announced by the team. Such lengthy delays are not uncommon for the 49ers. The 49ers Communications staff provided the following rundown via a press release. Wilks, 53, joins the 49ers from the Carolina Panthers (2022), where he was promoted to interim head coach in Week 6 after initially serving as the secondary/defensive pass

Kyle Shanahan, 49ers will have better idea of Brock Purdy recovery timeline in June

It could be six months. It could be eight months. The San Francisco 49ers don't have a clear picture right now regarding quarterback Brock Purdy's recovery timeline. They will have a better idea in June, though. That's when the second-year quarterback will begin throwing again and ramping up his workload for the remaining portion of his rehabilitation. Purdy underwent surgery to repair the tear of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow, an injury suffered on January 29 in the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles. "He won't be able to do anything on the field for—who knows?" head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters Tuesday morning from the NFL owners'

Are the 49ers interested in Lamar Jackson? Kyle Shanahan responds

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, understandably, was hesitant to field any questions about Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson. The coach holds the player in high esteem but doesn't want to get in trouble by discussing a player currently under contract with another organization. One reporter pressed, though, stating that he is asking every team about their interest in Jackson. "Everyone knows Lamar's skill set," Shanahan responded, hoping the reporter wasn't setting him up for a fine. "Lamar's a stud. I'm sure they'll work it out there. But Lamar's a great player." The reporter asked if there was any interest from the 49ers. "We've got three quarterbacks we're pretty good with right now," Shanahan responded, "and

Why Trey Lance faces uphill battle to win 49ers' starting job, per Kyle Shanahan

The San Francisco 49ers expect Brock Purdy to be ready to play between early September and early November. That's a significant range considering the 2023 NFL season begins in early September. Head coach Kyle Shanahan, speaking with reporters at the NFL owners' meetings in Arizona, said the team expects its 23-year-old quarterback's recovery from his March 10 surgery to be six to eight months. The 49ers will know more in June, when Purdy begins throwing again and starts ramping up his workload as part of his rehab. "It might be Week 1," Shanahan said. "I think I'm hearing, at the latest, Week 4. But that's just all estimations, and we'll see what
