49ers-Raiders Injury Report: Deebo Samuel’s return highlights Thursday practice

Dec 29, 2022 at 3:46 PM--

The San Francisco 49ers are preparing for their Week 17 contest against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The biggest news from Thursday's practice was the return of Deebo Samuel. The wide receiver joined his teammates on the field for the first time since sustaining MCL and ankle sprains against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on December 11. He is expected to be ready for the playoffs, with a return at some point in these last two regular-season games a possibility.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan stated that Samuel's return on Thursday was likely, but dependent on how his Wednesday workout went. Samuel was a limited participant in practice. With the NFC West title and a playoff spot already secured, there is no need to rush the receiver back.

Defensive end Nick Bosa and punter Mitch Wishnowsky returned after missing Wednesday due to illness.

As expected, defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw returned to practice after receiving Wednesday off, which was planned. The defensive lineman returned to the football field against the Washington Commanders this past Saturday, his first action since Week 3.

"I thought he did a good job," Shanahan said this week of Kinlaw's Week 16 performance. "I think the more he plays, the more we'll be able to keep him out there longer. That fourth-and-one down on the goal line, I thought he made a real big play there taking on the double team, taking two blockers, allowing [LB] Fred [Warner] and [DT] T.Y. [McGill] to make that play. So he really helped out, was stout in the run game, and that was a good first step."

Below are Thursday's practice participation reports for both the 49ers and Raiders, which were provided by the 49ers Communications staff.

Highlights from 49ers OTAs

By Marc Adams
May 24

The San Francisco 49ers are holding OTAs this week, and Tuesday's practice was open to the media. And while I personally was not there, there were plenty of reports coming out of the practice session, and the media session that followed, for us to be able to pull out some highlights from the day. Keep in mind, these are reports from one unpadded practice. Don't get too excited or discouraged by anything you read or hear. Let's jump in! The 49ers are optimistic that Brock Purdy will be ready by week one but admit that there's no guarantee. Both Purdy and Kyle Shanahan said as much. Purdy is scheduled to begin throwing a football next week. Up to this point, he's only been throwing a

The San Francisco 49ers and Las Vegas Raiders will hold two joint practices ahead of their preseason game at Allegiant Stadium. That exhibition matchup will take place on Sunday, August 13, the 49ers announced. Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports that the 49ers and Raiders will hold their joint practices on Thursday, August 10, and Friday, August 11. After the game against the Raiders, the 49ers will return to Levi's Stadium to host the Denver Broncos on Saturday, August 19, and Los Angeles Chargers on Friday, August 25, meaning the team will never leave the Pacific Time Zone during their exhibition

49ers OTAs: Brock Purdy may start throwing next week, Kyle Shanahan "pretty optimistic" about Week 1 return

On Tuesday, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan provided an update on Brock Purdy. The second-year quarterback underwent surgery on March 10 to repair the tear of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow, an injury he suffered in the NFC Championship Game in January. Purdy is recovering well. There have been no setbacks as the quarterback works his way to increasing his workload. "He's doing good," Shanahan said of his quarterback's recovery. "Still staying the same. [He's] on schedule." The 49ers always believed that Purdy would be able to start throwing a football again sometime in early June. That's next week. The good news is that nothing about that timeline has changed. "I think he's allowed to throw sometime

49ers' Brock Purdy: Recovery going well, Week 1 return still the goal

By David Bonilla
May 23

On Tuesday, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said he remains "pretty optimistic" that quarterback Brock Purdy would be available for Week 1 of the 2023 season. The 23-year-old underwent surgery on March 10 to repair the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) tear in his right elbow. Purdy is hopeful to be on the field with his teammates against the Pittsburgh Steelers on September 10. "Feeling good and taking it one day at a time," Purdy told reporters after Tuesday's practice, the second of organized team activities (OTAs). The quarterback obviously did not participate. However, the 49ers remain hopeful that Purdy can start some limited throwing
