49ers-Saints: Kyle Shanahan provides details on Deebo Samuel’s injury

Nov 26, 2022 at 8:34 AM--

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel was limited all week during practices as the team prepares for its Week 12 matchup against the New Orleans Saints. When head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters on Wednesday, rattling off the names of those who would not practice or be limited, Samuel's name was absent. It wasn't until the official practice participation report was released that the wideout's injury was revealed to reporters.

Samuel emerged from Monday night's win over the Arizona Cardinals with a hamstring injury. Although, it wasn't immediately known. And the injury was different than the Week 7 hamstring injury that occurred against the Kansas City Chiefs and kept him out the next week against the Los Angeles Rams.

"No, it was something different," Shanahan responded when asked if the two injuries were related. "We got back at like seven in the morning. I'm sure he went home and slept for a while. It was a little weird day."

While speaking with reporters before Wednesday's practice, the coach wasn't aware of the injury yet.

"He didn't feel it much on Tuesday," Shanahan continued. "Got the information on Wednesday, and then we were safe about it."

The 49ers have listed Samuel as "questionable" for Sunday's game against the Saints. The only other player on Friday's injury report was defensive lineman Arik Armstead, who has been listed as "doubtful" due to foot and ankle injuries.

It was unlikely that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo suited up on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles, serving as rookie Brock Purdy's backup in the NFC Championship Game. Still, there was a slight chance the injured veteran could be healthy enough to be active. The team awaited the results of an X-ray on Tuesday to see how much Garoppolo's broken foot has recovered. Head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters on Wednesday and shared that the 49ers got the X-ray results. "I don't expect to have him this week," Shanahan revealed. Garoppolo sustained his injury on December 4. A return for the Super Bowl remains a possibility. A new name was added to the 49ers' injury report. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel will not practice
