ESPN’s Chris Canty predicts Trey Lance and 49ers in Super Bowl

Aug 16, 2022 at 1:12 PM--

ESPN's Chris Canty, a former NFL defensive end, doesn't believe it will take long for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance to prove himself in the NFL. Canty is expecting an MVP-caliber season from the second-year player, and that's not all.

"I know you guys left me out of the bold prediction, but my bold prediction for this season is that the 49ers represent the NFC in the Super Bowl," Canty said on ESPN's GetUp. "That's how confident I am in this 49ers team and the development of Trey Lance, because of who's doing it—Kyle Shanahan—and what's around him—the supporting cast.

"You're talking about a top-five run game, a top-five skill-position core, and a top-five defense. All the elements are there for Trey Lance to be successful, and the thing that Trey Lance brings is a couple of new dimensions to the offense. The vertical passing game. We saw it in the preseason game with the bomb he threw to Danny Gray. And then the quarterback as a focal point of the running game."

All eyes were on Lance during the 49ers' preseason opener last week against the Green Bay Packers. The 22-year-old quarterback finished the game 4-of-5 for 92 yards, the touchdown to Gray, and a perfect passer rating of 158.3. Most expect San Francisco's offense to improve with a quarterback who can open up the deep passing game and improvise with his feet.

"Kyle Shanahan hasn't had either one of those things since he got to San Francisco," Canty continued. "So now, you're talking about giving one of the best play-callers, one of the most creative play designers, a weapon like this under center to go along with all the other weapons he has. Look out for the rest of the NFL. The 49ers are about to show up in a big way."

The San Francisco 49ers won...and lost on Sunday. The win came by beating the Seattle Seahawks, something the 49ers have not done much of over the last 10 years. The loss came when Trey Lance broke his ankle. He's believed to be lost for the season. It's been a rough first two weeks for 49ers fans. First there was the frustrating loss in Chicago, and now the injury to Lance. And to make matters worse, running back Ty Davis-Price sustained a high-ankle sprain that could sideline him for a few weeks. As you well know, Elijah Mitchell will already miss about two months with an MCL sprain. Injuries are beginning to mount. But fortunately for you, I'm fully healthy and ready to share this week's 49ers mailbag with you. Let's get to it. How many QBs

Sean Payton believes 49ers will eventually replace Trey Lance with Jimmy Garoppolo

Former NFL coach Sean Payton is the latest to toss criticism Trey Lance's way (h/t Tom Dierberger of NBC Sports Bay Area), following some harsh words from another former NFL coach, Mike Martz. Actually, Payton's comments came before Martz's but started to make their rounds around social media today. Payton believes the San Francisco 49ers will eventually replace their second-year quarterback with veteran Jimmy Garoppolo, the former starter now serving as Lance's backup. As for Martz, he was less-than-impressed by Lance's first outing as a full-time

49ers-Seahawks: Kyle Shanahan, Trey Lance hoping for better luck with George Kittle this week

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters ahead of Wednesday's practice. The team is hoping to bounce back from Sunday's disappointing 19-10 Week 1 loss to the Chicago Bears and preparing to host the Seattle Seahawks. Tight end George Kittle did not play in the regular-season opener. While he traveled with the team, hoping to play, a groin injury suffered in the week leading to the game kept him sidelined. "He's made progress, so hopefully, we'll have better luck this week," Shanahan said. Quarterback Trey Lance is one player who can't wait for Kittle's return. "High-energy guy," Lance said of the star player on Wednesday. "He's still around, obviously, in the building and stuff, but hopefully, get him back this
