Amazon searched for star broadcasters to headline their upcoming "Thursday Night Football" broadcasts. They reportedly approached San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch, a former broadcaster for FOX, about the opportunity.
Lynch turned them down, opting to remain with the 49ers.
The general manager spoke with reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis on Wednesday. He was asked about the decision to turn down what was reportedly a lucrative offer and remain an NFL executive.
"I came to this business because I was pulled by the opportunity to compete," Lynch said. "I think we have a very good team, and I think we have an opportunity to get better.
"It's flattering when people call, especially people whom you respect so much, old friends and whatnot, and show interest. You listen, but ultimately, I made a decision, my family made a decision, that this is where my heart is at right now, and that's what I've always had guide me. So, I'm happy to be here, and that's that."
The New York Post's Andrew Marchand reported that Amazon was willing to offer Lynch about three times his current salary, estimated to be about $5 million annually from the 49ers.
"That is a lot of money, though," Lynch added while laughing. "I can't believe they're paying that much for people that talk football. It's unbelievable."
Lynch has served as San Francisco's general manager since 2017, replacing Trent Baalke. He has helped the team reach two NFC Championship Games and a Super Bowl during that time.
