San Francisco 49ers receiver Deebo Samuel and head coach Kyle Shanahan have a special relationship on and off the field. On game days, fans are accustomed to the special "gadget" plays designed for Deebo, but apart from special moments, there's an established trust between the duo that's like no other.

Deebo notably called his own number on his 26-yard touchdown run against the Dallas Cowboys, and Shanahan trusted the decision, calling a play for his star, and letting it unfold in front of his eyes.

Before San Francisco's showdown against the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Championship game this Sunday, Shanahan, once again, had nothing but praise for his third-year receiver, touting his play amongst the best in the NFL.

"I think Deebo right now is playing like one of the best players in the NFL. So just to be able to do what he is doing, he's obviously talented, but the will that he has it's unbelievable," Shanahan said. "And Deebo is one of the most respectful players I've ever been around. He wants the ball because he believes he can change it at all times, but I think what he said to me actually was, 'Kyle, I got you.' And if he's got me, I'm going to give him the ball."

Shanahan admires the passion that Samuel has for both his teammates and football, as evidenced by his aggressive, yet disciplined play style that benefits the 49ers game plan.

"Deebo is a very good person that our team loves, and he cares about everybody, and that's why he is fun to watch because he does it the right way," Shanahan continued. "He's aggressive in everything he does, but yet he's not out of control in anything because that's who he is. He doesn't have to get himself real amped up for a game, which some people you see play with the physicality he does."

Shanahan added that Samuel was an inspiration to him and the team, making his job easier as the play-caller, knowing that his receiver back can execute what's called.

"To me, [remaining calm and disciplined on gamedays] allows him to play at such a physical level, but to do it at a higher level than most people do," Shanahan added. "And that's why he doesn't really call a shot much. He just inspires. And he inspires me, and he inspires our team, and that makes it a lot easier to call plays."

The duo will certainly be a significant factor this weekend when the 49ers will have a chance to go to their second Super Bowl in three years. But first, they have to get through their division-rival Los Angeles Rams for the third team this season.

Super Bowl-winning head coach Andy Reid of the Kansas City Chiefs witnessed all he needed from Brock Purdy last season to assure him that the San Francisco 49ers are in capable hands at the quarterback position. Purdy was an MVP nominee in 2023 and had his 49ers just a play or two away from clinching a Super Bowl victory away from the Chiefs. Unfortunately, for Purdy and the 49ers, Reid and his own quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, widely regarded as the best in the game today, dashed their Super Bowl dreams in overtime last month. According to NBC Sports Bay Area, speaking at the NFL owners meetings on Monday, Reid stated, "Yeah, I

Kyle Shanahan: 49ers hope to keep Brandon Aiyuk, Brock Purdy together

By David Bonilla
Mar 26

Last week, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan ran into his wide receiver, Brandon Aiyuk, while on vacation in Cabo San Lucas. "He was randomly at our hotel. I don't think he wanted to be," the coach shared on Tuesday while speaking to reporters at the NFL owners meetings. The 49ers are currently negotiating a long-term extension with Aiyuk to ensure he remains with the team for the foreseeable future. However, with it only being March, it's challenging to predict how everything will unfold. Typically, under the leadership of Shanahan and general manager John Lynch, the 49ers have reached agreements with their star players closer to training camp in July. Lynch stated yesterday that the
