Jerry Rice believes 49ers seek more consistency from the QB position

Jan 26, 2022 at 10:55 AM--

A lot has been said about quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who is not expected to remain with the San Francisco 49ers after this season. However, he has them in the NFC Championship Game, one win away from returning to the Super Bowl. What if Garoppolo can carry the great 49ers organization to its sixth championship? Would that be enough to make the team's decision-makers rethink their plan?

The 49ers have Garoppolo's successor on the roster. They traded multiple first-round picks to move into position to draft Trey Lance with the No. 3 overall pick last April. The plan was always to have Lance sit and learn while riding with Garoppolo as far as the 30-year-old quarterback could take him.

On Wednesday, NFL legend Jerry Rice joined NFL Network's NFL Now. Andrew Siciliano asked the Hall of Fame wide receiver if Garoppolo deserves to stay with the team if he leads it to another Super Bowl appearance—his second in three years.

Rice said that is up to the 49ers organization, not him.

"I think with Jimmy G, it's been like a rollercoaster ride because there are some great throws, and then there are some throws where you say, 'Why did he do that?'" Rice told Siciliano. "I think the Niners are trying to look for someone that's a little bit more consistent, that's not going to make those errant throws like that.

"I'm not saying that Jimmy G is going to leave the Niners or whatever. They might decide to keep him around much longer and decide to let Trey Lance just advance and learn more about being a starting quarterback."

49ers CEO Jed York said last year that he has no problem paying Garoppolo while Lance sits and learns for one—even two—years. That means it's possible San Francisco at least rethinks its plan. Garoppolo is signed through the 2022 season.

"I don't know what the decision is going to be," Rice continued, "but I know one thing: He's going to be behind center this coming Sunday [against the Los Angeles Rams], and it's up to him to really make the decisions on the football field, not make really stupid plays, turn the ball over, and get the ball in the hands of his playmakers. And I think we have a chance."

NFL analyst believes Jimmy Garoppolo starts for 49ers after hearing more about Trey Lance doubt

By David Bonilla

Ryan Harris, a former offensive lineman turned broadcaster and analyst, joined CBS Sports HQ to discuss the young quarterbacks of the San Francisco 49ers and Chicago Bears. He was asked which passer—Trey Lance or Justin Fields—finds himself in the best situation. Harris' answer? Lance, who is on a roster coming off an NFC title game appearance. However, there is one caveat to that answer. "But I'm here to tell you, after people I've talked to, everyone I've spoken to expected Jimmy Garoppolo to start [Week 1 against the Bears]," Harris said. There has been an offseason narrative that Trey Lance is not yet ready to step into the starting role for a team built to win now. Of course, those who follow the 49ers closely realize that if that

Why PFF believes 49ers signing Julio Jones makes sense

With the free-agency frenzy long gone and the NFL Draft behind us, NFL teams will move toward tweaking their rosters in preparation for the 2022 season. It's worth noting that there are still some well-known free agents awaiting offers—names like Jadeveon Clowney and Odell Beckham Jr. Veteran center J.C. Tretter might make sense for the San Francisco 49ers. The team is uncertain about the future of Alex Mack. General manager John Lynch is sounding less confident about the possibility of his starting center returning for his 14th NFL season. However, it's not Tretter that Pro Football Focus analyst Ben Linsey believes would be a good signing by the 49ers. Instead,

Fred Warner believes Deebo Samuel 'loves the team' but Pelissero says 49ers, WR remain in 'standoff'

San Francisco 49ers star linebacker Fred Warner spoke with NFL Network's Tom Pelissero following the NFL's schedule release yesterday. The Pro Bowl and All-Pro defender was asked about his disgruntled teammate, wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who requested a trade this offseason. Samuel is eligible for a contract extension, but there have been no updates on that front. And the 49ers didn't grant his wish for a trade either. Warner told Pelissero that 49ers teammates, like quarterback Trey Lance and tight end George Kittle, have been in contact with Samuel since the trade request became public last month. Pelissero pressed Warner to reveal his level of confidence that Samuel is playing for the 49ers come Week 1 against the Chicago Bears. "I

Ross Tucker believes 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo to Panthers remains a possibility

Former NFL offensive lineman turned sports broadcaster and analyst Ross Tucker doesn't "believe for a second" that the Carolina Panthers and Seattle Seahawks will enter Week 1 of the 2022 season with one of their current quarterbacks as the starter. Instead, he feels both teams will make a move to prevent that from happening. I don't believe for a second that the Panthers & Seahawks are going into Week 1 with their current QBs on the roster.— Ross Tucker (@RossTuckerNFL) May 16,
