Head coach Kyle Shanahan kept saying "Wednesday" when he meant "Tuesday" while mentioning the San Francisco 49ers' first practice of the week. That's because Tuesday will feel like the team's typical Wednesday, with some slight adjustments.
Shanahan's team is coming off an exhausting playoff win against the Dallas Cowboys. Now, they have a short week to prepare for their next playoff opponent—the Green Bay Packers. That preparation will kick off with a Tuesday evening practice in Santa Clara. Why the late 5:00 p.m. PT start?
"Yeah, everything's moved up one day," Shanahan explained on Monday while speaking with reporters on a conference call. "We're going to start a little bit later tomorrow (Tuesday). Just kind of to give us the morning, so we don't have to finish all the game plan and everything tonight. We'll be able to look over some stuff in the morning and also get the players just a little bit more time to sleep in."
The Packers will host the 49ers at Lambeau Field on Saturday night. The winner moves on to the NFC Championship Game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or Los Angeles Rams. Kickoff in Green Bay is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. PT (7:15 p.m. CT). Coming off a Sunday game, that's one less day to prepare.
"And I think the biggest thing on this week is going to be about recovery, so the more sleep we can do, and we'll slow most of the stuff down," Shanahan added. "I doubt we get many full-speed reps in this week. The main thing is we've just had two real physical games and a short week here, especially traveling. I'll take it pretty easy on the guys this week."
