49ers, Texans react to Trey Lance's performance in second start

Now that rookie quarterback Trey Lance's second NFL start is in the books, what's the verdict on his performance? Mostly positive, at least in the eyes of members of the San Francisco 49ers and Houston Texans. Lance finished 16-of-23 with 249 yards, two touchdowns, one interception and a passer rating of 116.0 in Sunday's 23-7 win over the Texans with 31 rushing yards on eight carries. Lance's interception was part of a slow start on offense for the 49ers that saw them score just three points in the first half, but he picked things up in the second half, throwing an eight-yard touchdown pass to running back Elijah Mitchell in the third quarter and a 45-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Deebo Samuel in the fourth quarter. His performance wasn't perfect, but he

"Trey did a good job," head coach Kyle Shanahan said after Sunday's win over the Houston Texans. "If Jimmy can't go [against the Rams], we won't hesitate at all. But if we feel Jimmy can go and play confident, then Jimmy will be

49ers' Trey Lance discusses improvement since last week, preparations for possible start against Rams

By Kirk Larrabee

If Trey Lance has to start at quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers this week in their pressure-packed showdown against the Los Angeles Rams, he'll at least have a good idea what he's getting into, along with a little more improvement under his belt since his previous start. Lance's status for Sunday's game in Los Angeles (4:25 p.m. ET/1:25 p.m. PT, FOX) remains up in the air due to the lingering uncertainty surrounding Jimmy Garoppolo, who was sidelined in favor of Lance against the Houston Texans last week due to a thumb injury. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has yet to announce who will start the game at quarterback, but Lance has been staying ready this week, in part, by splitting reps with Garoppolo after getting all of the first-team reps last week.
