It would appear that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is still sidelined due to the calf injury he suffered during this past weekend's loss to the Seattle Seahawks. He was not on the field with his teammates for today's practice, hurting his chances of playing on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.
Garoppolo wasn't able to practice on Wednesday either. However, the quarterback was more optimistic about his status compared to his initial reaction after the Week 4 defeat.
"It's better today, which is good news," head coach Kyle Shanahan
said before Wednesday's practice. "Not enough, though, to let him go [in practice], but also not enough to rule him out. The doctors still say [to] give him another day. He's got a chance [to play on Sunday], so we're still holding out for that."
Garoppolo was asked if he felt he might be battling discomfort if he could play on Sunday.
"I'd be battling through it, probably," the quarterback admitted. "We'll take it, like I said, day by day, but it hurts. But it is what it is at this point."
The situation could mean that rookie Trey Lance starts his first career NFL game. Following Garoppolo's injury, the 21-year-old quarterback started the second half of the game against the Seahawks. Lance finished the game 9-of-18 passing for 157 yards and two touchdowns. He also had 41 rushing yards on seven carries.
The good news is that Lance might have left tackle
Trent Williams (shoulder) protecting him. The veteran offensive lineman returned to practice after missing a day. However, tight end
George Kittle (calf) remains absent.

George Kittle hopes 49ers offense can 'take another step forward'
George Kittle recently spoke with ESPN during the Masters Tournament in Augusta, Georgia, where he joined other NFL stars for the golfing event. Of course, the conversation shifted toward football, with Laura Rutledge asking Kittle to reflect on the team's 2023 season, its Super Bowl defeat, and the motivation it provides for the upcoming season.
The tight end believes San Francisco maintained a competitive roster this offseason and is gearing up for another run at a championship. He emphasized the importance of maintaining good health and continual improvement for a successful upcoming season.
"Brock Purdy is a fantastic quarterback, and he's only going to get better because he's young," Kittle said. "And we were fortunate enough to be able to keep our entire
Could the 49ers trade up in the draft for a top tackle?
The San Francisco 49ers are likely hoping that a top offensive lineman drops to them at No. 31 in the first round of this month's draft. Fans would like to see the team add someone to compete with Colton McKivitz for the right tackle spot and potentially take over for Trent Williams when the future Hall of Famer decides to retire.
Having two studs bookending the offensive line would go a long way in protecting franchise quarterback Brock Purdy. While tackle may be the first-round target, depending on how the first 30 selections play out, San Francisco might have to trade up to get a genuinely impactful
Potential 49ers defensive draft target visiting this week
Last week, it was reported that the San Francisco 49ers planned to host former Kentucky cornerback Andru Phillips on a pre-draft visit. NFL Network's Mike Garafolo confirms that the visit will take place during the upcoming week, which marks the final opportunity for such visits to occur.
Phillips will also meet with the Chicago Bears and Houston Texans this week.
Adding a noteworthy tidbit to the social media post, Garafolo mentions, "A likely second-round pick, though some evaluators have first-round grades on
49ers sign WR Trent Taylor, reuniting with former draft pick
The San Francisco 49ers announced the signing of wide receiver Trent Taylor to a one-year deal, reuniting with the team's former fifth-round draft pick out of Louisiana Tech.
Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area was the first to report that the 49ers were discussing a potential reunion with Taylor. The receiver was part of head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch's first draft class in 2017 and spent his first four NFL seasons with the team.
