No shocker: Media schedule seemingly reveals Jimmy Garoppolo as the 49ers’ starting QB

Sep 6, 2021 at 4:09 PM--

The San Francisco 49ers released their practice and media schedule for this week, and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will speak with reporters on Wednesday. Why is that noteworthy? It should eliminate any doubt about the team's Week 1 starter. Not that there has been much doubt leading into this week.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan has always indicated that the 49ers plan to start Garoppolo this season, giving the No. 3 overall pick, Trey Lance, time to sit behind the veteran and continue learning the offense. Besides, Lance is still recovering from the chipped finger bone he suffered during the team's preseason finale against the Las Vegas Raiders.

A team's starting quarterback is typically among those scheduled to speak with reporters as game-preparation practices begin. That is Garoppolo this week. While Shanahan has avoided officially naming the veteran as the Week 1 starter because there was no strategic advantage in doing so, this week's schedule seems to have made the team's plan official.

This week, the 49ers will hold three practices—one each on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday—before traveling to Michigan for Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions. The team held a practice this morning, but the game-plan installation had not yet began.

Lance's status on Wednesday will be more important than today's. That and the days that follow will be more telling when it comes to his Week 1 availability. Today, Lance did participate in practice—albeit limited—without the stint he wore last week around the index finger on his throwing hand, but the rookie quarterback still did not attempt any passes.

"Everything's focused on this Sunday, and George is working his tail off to be there," general manager John Lynch said last week. "If not, it's nice that we do have a bye, and we're hopeful that time can allow him to heal enough to really lick this thing and put it behind us so he can get back in there at practice." Kittle won't return after the bye against the Indianapolis Colts. He won't return for the next game,

Kyle Shanahan is hopeful that his quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, recovers enough from his calf injury to be available after the bye week. It sounds like the quarterback will have an opportunity to return as the starter for Week 7's matchup against the Indianapolis Colts after Trey Lance started in his place this weekend. Shanahan spoke with reporters after today's 17-10 defeat at State Farm Stadium. He was asked if anything has changed regarding the team's quarterback situation. On Friday, the coach declared that Garoppolo would have been the Week 5 starter had the quarterback been healthy. "No, nothing's changed," Shanahan told reporters. "That was just one game. It was a tough loss right there, and I'm going to talk to our whole team tomorrow and think about how
