After today's practice, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan read off a long list of injury updates. Most are injuries we already knew about. Others are more recent. The good news is that the coach expects most—possibly all—of the players back for practice next week as the team prepares for its regular-season opener against the Detroit Lions on September 12.
Of course, the biggest headline-grabber is the injury update on rookie quarterback Trey Lance, who is still expected to return to practice next week, potentially as early as Monday. During this past weekend's preseason finale against the Las Vegas Raiders, Lance suffered a small fracture in his finger.
"I mean, any time you've got a small chip, it could linger," Shanahan said. "I hope it doesn't. I'm hoping he's back there next Monday. That's the goal. He seems positive about it. But we've got to be smart with it too."
Then there were the other injury updates.
"[Brandon Aiyuk] is still with his hamstring," Shanahan said. "[Arik Armstead] was just a maintenance day. [Travis Benjamin] is still in the concussion protocol. Kevin Givens just had a tight groin. It's been a little tight, so we just kept him out for maintenance. Dre Greenlaw, the same thing. Dontae Johnson, the same thing as last week—his abductor. He should be good next week."
Added Shanahan: "We do expect them back [next week]. I mean, I can't guarantee it, but that's the expectation."
