Trey Lance was among those in attendance for Carson Wentz's charity softball game in Fargo, North Dakota, which benefits his AO1 Foundation. The San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback didn't participate but spoke with reporters during the event. He shared his thoughts on the Bay Area and what he has been doing during his time off to prepare for training camp in a month.

Lance is in a pretty unique situation for a top-3 draft pick. As expected, he is the future of the organization. However, there is no rush to get him onto the football field. The 49ers held onto Jimmy Garoppolo and have a roster ready to compete right now. That makes things a lot easier for Lance, who can sit and learn behind the veteran quarterback.
Wentz also spoke with reporters and felt that Lance landed in the perfect situation for a young quarterback. There is less immediate pressure, and he has a mentor in front of him who has been to a Super Bowl.
"There are going to be a million things pulling you in one direction, then the other direction, pressure, expectations, all these things," Wentz said via NBC Sports Bay Area. "But I know Trey. He's got a great head on his shoulders. He's young, age-wise, but he's very mature. I know he's going to be just fine.
"He's in a great situation. They have a great culture there in San Fran, a good coaching staff. So I know he's going to do a great job, and I'm excited for him."
While Wentz feels Lance is in a position to have a great career, he had some advice for the 21-year-old quarterback who succeeded his own successor (Easton Stick) at North Dakota State.
Said Wentz: "I just keep telling him to be himself: 'Don't let any of those things change who you are, change your values, change your perspective on football. Just go play.'"
Lance played in just one game last season after the Bison's 2020 campaign was postponed due to COVID. In 2019, the quarterback completed 66.9 percent of his passes for 2,786 yards with 28 passing touchdowns and no interceptions through 16 games while adding 1,100 rushing yards with 14 rushing touchdowns.
In March, San Francisco traded up to the No. 3 overall pick and selected Lance a month later. The Philadelphia Eagles traded Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts this offseason.
