ESPN predicts futures for Julio Jones, Richard Sherman; one lands with 49ers

June 1 could be a key date for former San Francisco 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman. After that date, a team could sign the five-time Pro Bowl defender without having the move impact the formula for compensatory picks. The market has been nearly nonexistent for Sherman. Although, he will likely end up somewhere — probably before the start of the season.

June 1 also plays a part in any deal for Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones. Waiting until after the deadline, the Falcons gain some salary-cap flexibility, pushing some of the receiver's bonus money — or dead cap — to next year.

Bill Barnwell provided a more detailed explanation of the salary-cap implications of trading Jones in a recent feature for ESPN where the writer predicts post-June 1 deadline NFL deals. In it, Barnwell predicts the landing spots for both Jones and Sherman.

Don't get your hopes up if you are headed over to the article wanting to see the 49ers linked to Jones as a likely trade partner. While the marriage does make some sense, Barnwell has the Jacksonville Jaguars trading a 2022 second-round pick and wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. to acquire the seven-time Pro Bowler and two-time first-team All-Pro.

"The Kyle Shanahan link makes the 49ers a tantalizing option," wrote Barnwell, "but San Francisco is already down so much draft capital from the Trey Lance deal -- and it will need to use its cap space to re-sign guys like Fred Warner and Nick Bosa in the years to come."

On the other hand, Sherman is a strong candidate to return to San Francisco, in Barnwell's opinion. Within his predictions, the ESPN scribe has the veteran three-time first-team All-Pro signing a one-year, $4 million deal to return to his team of the past three seasons.

"Sherman is 33 and missed 11 games in 2020 with a calf injury, but he was an effective cornerback during his time with the 49ers," wrote Barnwell. "He's not going to be the All-Pro corner from the peak Seattle days, but Sherman is still a very viable NFL starter at this point of his career. Sherman's understanding of the game and insight into preparation may also be valuable to teams as they develop younger corners on the roster."

San Francisco held onto Jason Verrett this offseason, and Barnwell believes that bringing Sherman back could be a good insurance policy should the oft-injured Verrett be sidelined in the future.

ESPN analyst weighs in on 49ers potentially drafting a wide receiver

By David Bonilla
Apr 10

The San Francisco 49ers will likely add a rookie wide receiver via the draft, and it has nothing to do with Brandon Aiyuk's current contract situation. Deebo Samuel is about as physical a player as you'll find at the position, so wear and tear, along with his significant salary, has to be a concern. Jauan Jennings is slated to become an unrestricted free agent next year. The 49ers have tried to address the position recently, drafting Ronnie Bell in the seventh round last year and Danny Gray in the third round in 2022. While it's too early to judge Bell, Gray has played only 87 offensive snaps as a pro. His career stat line is unimpressive, recording only one reception for 10 yards on seven targets. One ESPN analyst and 49ers fan, Matt Miller, admits to being

Why one analyst is worried for Brock Purdy if 49ers trade Brandon Aiyuk

By David Bonilla
Apr 18

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy achieved a remarkable feat in 2023, setting a single-season franchise record with 4,280 passing yards. This accomplishment is noteworthy, considering the illustrious quarterbacks who have graced the organization's history. A significant portion of those yards came from wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who amassed a career-high and team-leading 1,342 receiving yards. Most of his 75 catches originated from passes thrown by Purdy. Amidst significant offseason chatter surrounding the 49ers' star receiver, including several unsubstantiated trade rumors, Aiyuk's future remains uncertain. Former NFL player James Jones, now an analyst, expressed concern for Purdy should Aiyuk's tenure in the Bay Area come to an end. "I

49ers sign CB Rock Ya-Sin to a one-year deal

By Site Staff
Apr 11

The San Francisco 49ers announced that they have signed cornerback Rock Ya-Sin to a one-year deal. He becomes the third cornerback to join the team this offseason. The Niners previously signed free agents Isaac Yiadom and Chase Lucas to one-year deals. The 49ers Communications staff provided the following rundown. Ya-Sin (5-11, 195) was originally drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the second round (34th overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft. Throughout his five-year NFL career with the Colts (2019-21), Las Vegas Raiders (2022), and Baltimore Ravens (2023), he has appeared in 66 games (40 starts) and registered 193 tackles, 29 passes defensed, two interceptions, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
