49ers’ Trey Lance tied for 3rd-best odds to win Offensive Rookie of the Year

May 2, 2021 at 2:21 PM--

Right now, new Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence owns the best odds to win Offensive Rookie of the Year honors, per DraftKings SportsBook (h/t to Patrick Tulini). Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields has the second-best odds. There is a tie in third place between Zach Wilson of the New York Jets and Trey Lance of the San Francisco 49ers.

At least two of those names are likely to be starters during their upcoming rookie campaigns. Lance may not be. With only 17 games of collegiate experience on his resume, the former North Dakota State quarterback is expected to sit and learn behind veteran Jimmy Garoppolo for at least the 2021 season. That was the reason behind holding onto Garoppolo.

"I want Jimmy to be here, and I want this kid to be brought along," head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Thursday. "I want to see how he does. And if it turns into a competition, it turns into a competition. I'd be excited about that, if he showed he was ready for it and stuff."

That could hurt his odds. When he is ready, though, many expect the pairing with Shanahan to result in a lot of future success for the player, offense, and team.

Below are the current betting odds for Offensive Rookie of the Year from DraftKings SportsBook.

  • Trevor Lawrence +300
  • Justin Fields +500
  • Trey Lance +700
  • Zach Wilson +700
  • Ja'Marr Chase +1100
  • Kyle Pitts +1100

All eyes will be on Garoppolo and Lance during training camp. It's not expected to be a battle for now, but it sure would make headlines if it turned into one.

Garoppolo was the first 49ers player to reach out to Lance — via text message — after the young quarterback heard his name called on Thursday night.

"It meant the world to me and my family, especially, that he reached out to me and sent that message," Lance recently told team reporter Keiana Martin. "It was really encouraging for me just to know that we'll be able to have an awesome relationship. And I just told him I'm super excited to learn from him.

"I know he's going to be an awesome mentor, like I said, for me. I'm super excited to just be around him."

Jimmy Garoppolo is trying to fend off anyone from overtaking him on the depth chart — specifically, the No. 3 overall pick, Trey Lance. It sounds like he put in a solid effort during organized team activities, which ended today. The veteran quarterback will look to continue impressing his coaches in training camp at the end of July. Garoppolo is slated to be the San Francisco 49ers' starting quarterback when the team kicks off against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field on September 12. Head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters today and expressed how pleased he is with Garoppolo's performance during the offseason program. "I think Jimmy had his best spring

San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle joined Michael Silver and his daughter, Natalie, on the latest Pass It Down podcast. Of course, the topic of quarterbacks came up. The Niners have Jimmy Garoppolo, who helped guide the team to a Super Bowl just over 16 months ago. But the team also planned for the future, trading up to select Trey Lance out of North Dakota State with the No. 3 overall pick. While Kittle remains loyal to his starting quarterback of the past three and a half seasons, the All-Pro tight end is impressed with his new rookie quarterback. "He's a freak athlete. It's kind of fun to watch that. It is," Kittle told the Silvers. "He's got a cannon for an arm too. That's fun to watch too. It's a different style of quarterback play, for

Kyle Shanahan discusses having a dual-threat quarterback in 49ers rookie Trey Lance

Head coach Kyle Shanahan has a lot of confidence in quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo's ability to lead the San Francisco 49ers offense. That confidence may waver when it comes to depending on his veteran passer to be available for the majority of the season. That, not his skill set, led Shanahan and the 49ers to seek another quarterback in the draft. In January, Shanahan fell in love with the idea of acquiring Trey Lance. He liked several of this year's rookie quarterbacks, but it was the North Dakota State product who pushed him to want to trade up from No. 12 overall. So San Francisco did exactly that, moving up to No. 3 to select Lance, a prospect with little experience but huge upside. Most assume that it is Lance's athletic ability that drew Shanahan to the

San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle joined Good Morning Football today and was asked about his new quarterback, rookie Trey Lance. The team concluded its offseason program last week, and won't hit the practice field again until the end of July. In April, the Niners traded a haul of future picks to move up to the No. 3 overall spot to select Lance. After finally being able to haul in some passes from the quarterback, Kittle has been impressed by the 21-year-old.
