49ers’ Trey Lance tied for 3rd-best odds to win Offensive Rookie of the Year

May 2, 2021 at 2:21 PM--

Right now, new Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence owns the best odds to win Offensive Rookie of the Year honors, per DraftKings SportsBook (h/t to Patrick Tulini). Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields has the second-best odds. There is a tie in third place between Zach Wilson of the New York Jets and Trey Lance of the San Francisco 49ers.

At least two of those names are likely to be starters during their upcoming rookie campaigns. Lance may not be. With only 17 games of collegiate experience on his resume, the former North Dakota State quarterback is expected to sit and learn behind veteran Jimmy Garoppolo for at least the 2021 season. That was the reason behind holding onto Garoppolo.

"I want Jimmy to be here, and I want this kid to be brought along," head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Thursday. "I want to see how he does. And if it turns into a competition, it turns into a competition. I'd be excited about that, if he showed he was ready for it and stuff."

That could hurt his odds. When he is ready, though, many expect the pairing with Shanahan to result in a lot of future success for the player, offense, and team.

Below are the current betting odds for Offensive Rookie of the Year from DraftKings SportsBook.

  • Trevor Lawrence +300
  • Justin Fields +500
  • Trey Lance +700
  • Zach Wilson +700
  • Ja'Marr Chase +1100
  • Kyle Pitts +1100

All eyes will be on Garoppolo and Lance during training camp. It's not expected to be a battle for now, but it sure would make headlines if it turned into one.

Garoppolo was the first 49ers player to reach out to Lance — via text message — after the young quarterback heard his name called on Thursday night.

"It meant the world to me and my family, especially, that he reached out to me and sent that message," Lance recently told team reporter Keiana Martin. "It was really encouraging for me just to know that we'll be able to have an awesome relationship. And I just told him I'm super excited to learn from him.

"I know he's going to be an awesome mentor, like I said, for me. I'm super excited to just be around him."

It's only been a week since Trey Lance was drafted No. 3 overall by the San Francisco 49ers. However, one ESPN analyst, Matt Miller, is already touting the young quarterback as a potential 2021 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year candidate. It is worth noting that Miller is a lifelong 49ers fan, so that may influence his opinion. But there is certainly a lot of excitement surrounding Lance's potential within head coach Kyle Shanahan's creative offense. Mel Kiper went with Atlanta Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts as his choice. Todd McShay went with Pittsburgh Steelers running back Najee Harris. Louis Riddick picked Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase. "Great choices guys, but this is still a quarterback league,"

Justin Fields of Ohio State spent about a week as the betting favorite to be the No. 3 overall pick by the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday, surpassing Mac Jones of Alabama. Jones regained the lead and has held onto it for the past five days. During all of that, Trey Lance of North Dakota State had been in the No. 3 spot. On Sunday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network dropped a bombshell. It was news that had already been rumored, but the story means more when the longtime NFL insider reports it. Rapoport stated that the decision in the 49ers clubhouse has come down to two candidates — Jones and Lance. If accurate, it sounds like Fields may be out. The news has created a shift among betting odds. Jones remains the favorite. He is now following by Lance.

'I know we're going to push each other': 49ers rookie Trey Lance excited to learn from Jimmy Garoppolo

Awkward. That's a word that can be used to describe the quarterback situation in San Francisco. The 49ers plan to enter the 2021 season with Jimmy Garoppolo as their starter. However, they surrendered a haul of future draft picks to move up to the No. 3 spot this year. The team selected quarterback Trey Lance of North Dakota State on Thursday night. He will eventually replace Garoppolo. Yes, that could be an awkward situation in the quarterback room. Lance doesn't see it as awkward, though. He sees it as an opportunity. Sitting behind Garoppolo for a season is an opportunity for the young quarterback to learn from a veteran who is very comfortable with the offense. It's an opportunity to study behind a quarterback who is 26-9 as a starter in the

Jerry Rice willing to work with 49ers rookie Trey Lance

"They have their Ferrari," said Jerry Rice this morning on 95.7 The Game. The Hall of Fame wide receiver is referring to Trey Lance, the quarterback drafted No. 3 overall by the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday night. Rice is excited about the pick and could not believe his ears when it was announced. And, Trey, if you need anything, just give Jerry a call. Rice said that he's already spoken with Lance and is willing to continue working with the young quarterback as he embarks on his NFL journey. Maybe that means hauling in some passes from the newest Niner during pre-game warmups or even on their own. Before the pandemic, Rice would often be in attendance at 49ers home games. "We have a line of communication so he can reach
