Analyst on 49ers’ draft options: ‘John Lynch wants Trey Lance’

Apr 22, 2021 at 10:31 AM--

Analyst and writer Michael Detillier, who contributes to several media outlets, joined the BetQL Daily podcast on Thursday and discussed the San Francisco 49ers' upcoming quarterback decision in next week's draft. Detillier recalls the day the team moved up nine spots from No. 12 overall to get into a position to acquire one of the top young talents. He was getting ready to publish his mock draft and needed to make some changes as it was headed to print due to the trade.

While the national narrative quickly linked Mac Jones of Alabama to the 49ers, Detillier heard that general manager John Lynch had his sights set on a different prospect. Whether or not head coach Kyle Shanahan felt the same way is unknown.

"When I went to print was the day of the trade," Detillier said. "I had been told by a source that I trust immensely, who covers the 49ers, he told me, point-blank, John Lynch wants Trey Lance. So, that's what I went with because I had to redo the first-round because of it. So that's where I went with it."

Jones is currently the betting favorite to be the No. 3 overall pick. He is followed by Justin Fields of Ohio State and then Lance of North Dakota State.

Also, nearly a month has passed since the trade. Shanahan and Lynch have now seen all three prospects work out in person. The analyst and writer still believes that Lance will end up in San Francisco.

Added Detillier: "Now, this has swung to Mac Jones, and [they attended] Justin Fields' pro day, and Trey Lance's pro day. In the end, I think it's Trey Lance."

In one week, we'll find out what the 49ers ultimately decide to do. The 2021 NFL Draft begins on Thursday, April 29.

49ers' John Lynch clarifies what John Beck's role was in process with Trey Lance

One of the storylines heading into the draft was that the San Francisco 49ers suggested quarterback Trey Lance work with private coach John Beck at the team's request. ESPN's Dan Graziano was the first to report the news and stated that the 49ers provided Beck with a list of drills and things they wanted to see from Lance during his second pro day workout. Beck, a former NFL quarterback, previously worked with Kyle Shanahan when the 49ers head coach was the offensive coordinator in Washington. General manager John Lynch offered some clarification over the weekend. The 49ers didn't insist Lance work with Beck at all. The former North Dakota quarterback had an early

ESPN analyst believes Trey Lance can win Offensive Rookie of the Year

It's only been a week since Trey Lance was drafted No. 3 overall by the San Francisco 49ers. However, one ESPN analyst, Matt Miller, is already touting the young quarterback as a potential 2021 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year candidate. It is worth noting that Miller is a lifelong 49ers fan, so that may influence his opinion. But there is certainly a lot of excitement surrounding Lance's potential within head coach Kyle Shanahan's creative offense. Mel Kiper went with Atlanta Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts as his choice. Todd McShay went with Pittsburgh Steelers running back Najee Harris. Louis Riddick picked Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase. "Great choices guys, but this is still a quarterback league,"

John Lynch says Jimmy Garoppolo embracing the competition after 49ers draft Trey Lance

By David Bonilla

Keeping a veteran quarterback while drafting his eventual replacement isn't a new idea. The San Francisco 49ers did that last week with the selection of Trey Lance of North Dakota State. They also intend to keep Jimmy Garoppolo, their starter since 2017, around. The Kansas City Chiefs did it with Alex Smith and Patrick Mahomes. The 49ers did it with Smith and Colin Kaepernick. The Green Bay Packers did it with Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers. It's a solid blueprint that allows a rookie to more easily transition from the college game to the pros, especially when thrown into an offense as complex as head coach Kyle Shanahan's. "First and foremost, Jimmy's really good," general manager John Lynch said this morning on KNBR's Murph & Mac show. "He's a
