For nearly a week, oddsmakers gave Justin Fields of Ohio State the best odds to be selected No. 3 overall by the San Francisco 49ers. That followed weeks of Mac Jones of Alabama being in the top spot.
On March 26, the Niners traded up nine spots for a quarterback by surrendering four draft picks, including three first-rounders, to the Miami Dolphins. The speculation on who the team might be targeting started immediately, with most "experts" feeling that Jones fit the profile of someone who head coach Kyle Shanahan would covet.
On Monday, Shanahan and general manager John Lynch watched Trey Lance of North Dakota State at his second pro day. While that increased Lance's odds, it wasn't enough to overtake Jones or Fields.
On Wednesday morning, Jones regained the top spot in the eyes of oddsmakers. He once again has the best odds to be drafted by the 49ers.
