Peter Schrager on draft: ‘I’m told the 49ers still have not made a decision’

Justin Fields of Ohio State. Trey Lance of North Dakota State. Mac Jones of Alabama. Who will it be for the San Francisco 49ers at the No. 3 spot in the upcoming draft? Everyone seems to have an opinion.

While Fields remains the betting favorite to be the pick, many "experts" are still projecting Jones to the 49ers. That includes Peter Schrager of Good Morning Football, who released his latest mock draft on NFL.com on Tuesday morning.

Schrager has Trevor Lawrence of Clemson going No. 1 to the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Zach Wilson of BYU going No. 2 to the New York Jets, as most mock drafts do. He has Jones as the 49ers' pick, despite acknowledging that the decision in Santa Clara may not be finalized.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan, general manager John Lynch, and quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello were in Columbus, Ohio, last week to watch Fields throw in person. On Monday, they were in Fargo, North Dakota, to see Lance. Both are seen as more athletic and having higher ceilings than Jones. However, the Alabama quarterback is viewed by many as more pro-ready right now.

"We're less than two weeks away and I'm still feeling Mac Jones is the guy," Schrager wrote. "I'm told the 49ers still have not made a decision and continue to do their work on all three quarterback prospects who would be available: Jones, Justin Fields and Trey Lance. Jones had one of the greatest college football seasons we've seen in recent years, and pro scouts like him a lot -- even if the pundits do not."

Schrager has Fields falling to the Carolina Panthers at No. 8, and Lance going to the Denver Broncos at No. 9.

The 2021 NFL Draft begins on April 29 from Cleveland, Ohio. The 49ers surrendered four draft picks, including their first-rounders in the next three drafts, to move up nine spots from No. 12 overall.

Do the San Francisco 49ers know who they're taking with the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft? Possibly, but if they do, they're not going to tell the public before the pick is announced. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch spoke with reporters for around 30 minutes on Monday regarding the upcoming draft, which will begin Thursday evening (8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT) in Cleveland, Ohio. The main topic of discussion, of course, was what the 49ers will do at pick 3, and where they stand at this point in the process. There have been reports in recent days that the 49ers have made a decision and that they still are debating their decision, but either way, Shanahan wasn't about to give any hints. "So, do we know exactly who we want? Maybe,

Schefter: Compelling QB options have 49ers going back and forth on draft decision

Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch have the biggest decision of their San Francisco 49ers tenure approaching. On Thursday night, the head coach and general manager duo will select a quarterback of the future with the No. 3 overall pick, a selection for which they traded a haul of draft picks, including first-rounders in 2022 and 2023. If they hit on the pick, it could lead to consistent success for the foreseeable future. If they miss on the pick, though, it could put one or even both of them on the hot seat within the next few years. For most of the time since that March 26 trade, the betting favorite has been Mac Jones of Alabama. Adam Schefter of ESPN believes the Crimson Tide product would have been the selection had the draft taken place a month ago. However, a

Peter King mocks Mac Jones to 49ers, won't be surprised if price drops for Jimmy Garoppolo

Longtime NFL reporter Peter King posted his first and only mock draft of the season Monday morning, and in it, he guessed the San Francisco 49ers will use their first-round pick on Alabama quarterback Mac Jones -- and that it also wouldn't be a surprise if they decided to trade current quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo in the days ahead for less than the first-round pick they were originally reported to be seeking. King included his mock draft in his weekly Pro Football in America column, which was posted by Pro Football Talk early Monday morning.

'I want Jimmy to be here': Kyle Shanahan excited to still have Garoppolo after 49ers draft Trey Lance

Jimmy Garoppolo remains on the San Francisco 49ers roster. There was some doubt whether or not that would be the case. Reports surfaced that the team might look to trade the quarterback before or during the 2021 NFL Draft. The 49ers drafted Garoppolo's eventual replacement on Thursday night, selecting Trey Lance of North Dakota State with the No. 3 overall pick. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has repeatedly stated that Garoppolo remains in the 49ers' plans for the upcoming season and is slated to be the team's starter. That will allow the incoming rookie the luxury of sitting and learning behind Garoppolo. Some might assume the drafting of Lance might lead to some awkwardness in the 49ers' quarterbacks room. After all, Garoppolo is not far removed from helping guide
