According to John Lund of KNBR, colleague Greg Papa reports that the San Francisco 49ers have a four-year, $80 million deal on the table for offensive tackle Trent Williams. However, Papa speculates that amount may not be enough to retain the eight-time Pro Bowler. The play-by-play radio announcer reportedly states that the team will probably need to increase the offer to retain the player.
Papa says #49ers have a 4-$80M on table for @TrentW71 , no other details. Will have to come up to keep 71. Have to be creative, other teams (Indy) have more $ space and need as well.
Williams is expected to be a big free-agency draw. NFL Network reported this morning that the offensive lineman wasn't even around for the start of free agency. He was on vacation in Mexico but has since returned.
San Francisco traded for Williams last year during the draft. After spending a year off from football, he replaced a retiring Joe Staley at left tackle. Williams had a superb season and was Pro Football Focus' highest-graded tackle and second-highest graded offensive lineman.
Williams turns 33 in July but expects to play for many more years.
"I'm definitely poised for another, in my opinion, six seasons that I can play at a high level," Williams recently said on The Cris Collinsworth Podcast while speaking with teammate Richard Sherman. "That's kind of how I'm looking at it."
